  • Mike Clevinger doesn’t finish five innings in loss
    Mike Clevinger allowed three earned runs in 4 ⅔ innings in a loss to the Yankees on Friday. He also walked two and struck out five.

    Advice: Clevinger ran into the buzzsaw that is Aaron Judge who took him deep in the first and then fell victim to the middle of the Yankees lineup in a two-run fourth inning.   • Jesús Luzardo strikes out seven, earns win
    Jesús Luzardo completed six innings in the Marlins 8-0 win over the Mets on Friday. He struck out seven, walked none, and allowed seven hits.

    Advice: Luzardo has been fantastic since returning from the IL, striking out 15 in 11 ⅔ innings across two starts putting a rough start to the season behind him. However, be advised his fastball averaged just 94.7 MPH Friday. That was his lowest mark in a single start this season and after he’s already spent time on the shelf with elbow tightness.     Means (2-0) earned the win Friday over the Mariners, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out four.

    Advice: Means got off to a rocky start, allowing a run on three hits in the first inning. However, he'd settle down and hold Seattle to just one additional run over his final five frames in an eventual 9-2 Orioles win. It was a nice bounce-back effort from Means, after he gave up four runs in just 4.2 innings against Arizona in his last start. The 31-year-old southpaw lowered his ERA to 3.06 with a 0.85 WHIP and 15 strikeouts while still not issuing a walk over 17.2 innings.   • John Means strikes out four in win over Mariners
    John Means logged a quality start in Friday evening’s victory over the Mariners, surrendering just two runs on six hits across six frames.

    Advice: The 31-year-old southpaw punched out four batters on the night and didn’t allow a base on balls. He allowed an RBI single to Mitch Garver in the first inning, then served up a solo blast to Dylan Moore in the fifth, but that was the extent of the damage done against him in this one. Means got 11 swings and misses on 95 pitches on the night — eight of those on his changeup — while registering a CSW of 32 percent. Through his first three starts, he now sits at 2-0 with a 3.06 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and a 15/0 K/BB ratio over 17 2/3 innings.     Irvin (2-4) took the loss Friday against the Phillies, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out two.

    Advice: Irvin got off to a shaky start Friday, allowing all four runs over his first three innings. The 27-year-old right-hander had allowed just four earned runs in his previous three starts (18 innings), striking out 13 while issuing just one walk in that span. Overall, Irvin has a solid 3.91 ERA with a 1.11 WHIP and 38:9 K:BB over nine starts (50.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Twins in his next outing.     Jake Irvin wasn’t at his best in a losing effort against the Phillies on Friday night, giving up four runs on five hits over his five innings of work.

    Advice: The 27-year-old hurler walked one and struck out two batters on the night. The Phillies got him for a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Alec Bohm, then scratched out a pair of runs in the second inning and added another in the third on an RBI double by Brandon Marsh. Irvin got 10 swings and misses on 93 pitches on the evening — seven of those on his curveball — while registering a CSW of 27 percent.   • Extends throwing distance
    Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Rodriguez (shoulder) has extended his throwing program out to 60 feet, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

    Advice: Rodriguez had to pause his throwing program in early April due to discomfort in his left shoulder, but the fact that he's extended his throwing distance is an encouraging sign.   • Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) throwing at 60 feet
    Diamondbacks’ skipper Torey Lovullo told reporters on Friday that Eduardo Rodriguez is now throwing at a distance of 60 feet.

    Advice: He has yet to throw off of a mound, but the fact that he has been playing catch and gradually increasing his distance is at least an encouraging sign. He’s going to require a long and slow build up — and several minor league rehab starts — before he’s ready to make his Diamondbacks’ debut.     Maeda (illness) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

    Advice: Maeda has been dealing with a viral illness that landed him on the IL on May 11. He began throwing off the mound Wednesday, and he'll make a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Barring any setback, that would put Maeda in line to return for May 24 against the Blue Jays.
