    • Framber Valdez turns in quality start in loss
      Framber Valdez surrendered three runs in six innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Mariners.

      Advice: All of the runs scored in the first, an inning that could have been much worse if Jake Meyers didn’t cover half of the outfield to chase down a Cal Raleigh fly with the bases loaded. Valdez still gave up four hits that inning, but he allowed just two more the rest of the way. Nevertheless, he still took the loss in a 3-2 game, leaving him 3-3 with a 4.34 ERA for the season.       Astros placed RHP Cristian Javier on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 24, due to right forearm discomfort.

      Advice: The Astros don’t seem to think Javier’s problem is significant, but we’ll see. He’ll definitely miss two starts now. The Astros could bring up Eric Lauer to step in if they want to stick with a six-man rotation, but that’s not the immediate plan; they’re going with Hunter Brown, Justin Verlander and Spencer Arrighetti from Tuesday through Thursday.       The Astros placed Javier on the 15-day injured list Monday, retroactive to May 24, due to right forearm discomfort.

      Advice: Javier was scheduled for a bullpen session Sunday, but he was pulled after experiencing discomfort in his right forearm. He'll be sent for imaging Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury, per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. With Javier on the IL, Hunter Brown will start Tuesday against the Mariners, while Justin Verlander and Spencer Arrighetti take the mound Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, per Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle.       Reds manager David Bell said Monday that Friedl (thumb) could return as soon as late this week or early next week, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

      Advice: Just six games into his return from a fractured right wrist, Friedl suffered a broken left thumb as a result of a hit-by-pitch. Fortunately for Friedl and the Reds, it doesn't sound like he will have to miss nearly as much action this time around. Bell has already said he thinks Friedl could bypass a rehab assignment.     • Drives in two in win
      Lowe went 2-for-4 with two RBI in Sunday's 6-2 win over Minnesota.

      Advice: Lowe had a pair of run-producing singles, his first multi-hit game since May 8. The first baseman entered Sunday with just six hits over the last 49 at-bats (.122).       Friedl (thumb) has started hitting off a tee and may not require a rehab assignment, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Apparently, Friedl is progressing at such a rate that manager David Bell feels he can avoid any detours and jump back into the majors.     • Moves down order amid slump
      Julien went 0-for-2 in Sunday's loss to the Rangers. He was moved down to eighth in the lineup against a right-handed starter amid a 1-for-25 slump that has lowered his batting average to .199 and his OPS to .674.

      Advice: Julien also has just one walk over his last eight games as well as his struggles since the end of April have accelerated. He was hitting just .147 with a .418 OPS over his last 24 games before Sunday. Moving him down in the order from his usual leadoff spot against right-handed pitchers is a sign of his recent troubles. His slump has lasted long enough that he may start to lose playing time and it's not out of the question that he could face a trip to the minors to get him back on track . Chandler Rome of The Athletic speculates Hunter Brown could start Tuesday on four days' rest, with Eric Lauer a possibility to be called up from Triple-A Sugar Land to fill Javier's turn in the rotation Wednesday.
