  • Decent outing versus Cubs
    Smith-Shawver allowed three hits and two walks while striking out four over 4.1 shutout innings Thursday versus the Cubs, taking a no-decision.

    Advice: Smith-Shawver pitched fairly well, aside from needing 87 pitches (55 strikes) to get 13 outs. It's a much better showing than his 6.10 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 35:17 K:BB over 31 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett to begin 2024. The right-hander's call-up appears to be a spot start on the surface after Atlanta's doubleheader earlier in the week, so it's unclear if the team will make room for him beyond Thursday.     Montas allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over six innings in a no-decision versus the Padres on Thursday.

    Advice: Montas has allowed 12 runs (11 earned) across 15.2 innings over his last three starts, though he's avoided taking a loss in any of those games. The Padres got to him early Thursday before he bounced back and finished strong. The right-hander is at a 4.61 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 28:16 K:BB over 41 innings across nine starts this season.     Waldron allowed two runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Reds on Thursday.

    Advice: Waldron allowed a run in each of the first two innings before settling in. He's allowed a total of five runs over his last 16 innings while adding a 23:6 K:BB in that span. Waldron's overall numbers are still mediocre -- he has a 4.86 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 52:19 K:BB through 50 innings across 10 starts -- but he's shown improvement and resilience after a tough outing versus Arizona to begin May.     Rangers optioned RHP Cole Winn to Triple-A Round Rock.

  • Jalen Beeks blows another save Thursday
    Jalen Beeks blew his second save in as many days against the Athletics on Thursday.

    Advice: Beeks started the ninth inning with a one-run lead and immediately gave it up by allowing a home run to Athletics outfield Daz Cameron.   • Estes allows four runs in no-decision
    Joey Estes allowed four runs in seven innings, struck out six and got a no-decision against the Rockies on Thursday.



    Advice: Seven innings marked the longest start of Estes’ young major league career. The six strikeouts were also a career-high for him. He’s still not usable in fantasy, but it was something for him to build on. The 22-year-old right-hander Is set to face the Rays on the road next week.

  • Feltner tosses six shutout innings Thursday
    Ryan Feltner threw six shutout innings, struck out six, and got a no-decision in the Rockies’ 10-9 loss to the Athletics on Thursday.



    Advice: Feltner cruised through six innings against the Athletics and left the game with a 4-0 lead. The Rockies bullpen couldn’t hold that lead, though. Feltner has just one win in 10 starts this season and his ERA is now 5.07. The 27-year-old right-hander is set to face the Guardians at home next week.

  • To resume throwing
    Wells (elbow) plans to resume throwing this week in Sarasota, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports.

    Advice: This would be the first time Wells would play catch since May 1, which was right before he was sent for additional testing. The right-hander was placed on the injured list April 13 due to right elbow inflammation. His last outing was April 12 when he allowed four runs through four innings against Milwaukee.     Advice: Wells hit the injured list back in mid-April with right elbow inflammation and has finally been cleared to kick off a throwing program. The 29-year-old righty is still several weeks, if not longer, away from being an option for Baltimore’s starting rotation mix, which took a hit earlier this week with John Means suffering a forearm strain.
