      Advice: Naylor has a pair of three-hit efforts over his last five games, but he went 0-for-7 with a walk and three strikeouts in between those contests. The catcher has started to show a bit more life with the bat, hitting .286 (14-for-49) with eight extra-base hits over 16 contests in June, though he also struck out 15 times. Naylor's at a .207/.274/.335 slash line with four home runs, 17 RBI, 22 runs scored, one stolen base, nine doubles and one triple through 197 plate appearances this year. His playing time has rebounded after dipping in late May and early June, but Naylor will need to continue to make a good effort with David Fry around to poach starts behind the dish.     • Exits after being hit in head
      Ward (head) exited Sunday's game against the Tigers in the bottom of the ninth inning after being hit the in head by a pitch, Greg Beacham of The Associated Press reports. He went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his first three plate appearances of the day.

      Advice: Ward was struck in the head after a 93 mph fastball got away from reliever Shelby Miller. The outfielder looked to be OK after getting hit, with his removal from the contest potentially being a matter of precaution, according to Beacham. The 30-year-old missed the final three months of the 2023 campaign after being hit in the face by a pitch from Toronto starter Alek Manoah, making the situation Sunday particularly jarring.     • CJ Abrams on base three times Sunday
      CJ Abrams went 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base on Sunday against the Rays.

      Advice: The Nationals offense was quiet in this one despite Abrams’ knack for getting on base. This was the second time in five games Abrams drew multiple walks and his walk total for June got up 11. That’s a welcome sight after he walked just one time the entire month of May.     • Hits leadoff homer Saturday
      Abrams went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double, a walk, two total runs and two total RBI in an 8-1 win against the Rays on Saturday.

      Advice: Abrams didn't wait long to make his presence felt, swatting a 396-foot homer to lead off the contest. It was the 13th long ball of the campaign for the shortstop, and he's well on pace to surpass the 18 home runs he hit during his first full big-league season last year. Abrams hasn't been as successful as a runner this season -- he's just 13-for-22 in stolen-base attempts after going 47-for-51 in 2023 -- but he's otherwise shown growth in nearly every offensive category, slashing .278/.334/.498 with 20 doubles, five triples, 50 runs and 42 RBI through 328 plate appearances.       Advice: Garcia's blast got the Rangers within a run in the eighth inning, but they failed to tie the game. The outfielder has hit safely in eight of the last nine games, going 10-for-35 (.286) with three homers and four RBI in that span.       Kimbrel worked around two walks in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Rangers.

      Advice: Kimbrel, who hadn't walked multiple batters in an outing since May 8, was able to pitch his way out of trouble. He's allowed two runs (one earned) while posting a 13:5 K:BB over 9.1 innings in June, converting six of his seven chances this month. Kimbrel is up to 19 saves with a 2.37 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 44:14 K:BB through 30.1 innings overall. Kimbrel has pitched three of the last four days, so he may not be available if a save situation arises Sunday. With Jacob Webb, Yennier Cano and Cionel Perez also having pitched Friday and Saturday, there could be an opportunity for Dillon Tate or Bryan Baker to get a look in a high-leverage spot.       Craig Kimbrel walked two, but didn’t give up a run while picking up a save Saturday against the Rangers.

      Advice: Kimbrel walked Leody Taveras to lead off the inning and then gave up a stolen base to the outfielder, and he then got the next two outs. He issued another free pass to Josh Smith, but he was able to get Adolis Garcia to fly out and pick up the save. Crisis averted. Kimbrel has 19 saves and a 2.37 ERA in the first half of 2024.
