      Advice: The right-hander looked good in his first appearance since May 25, topping out at 99.6 mph with his fastball. Diaz had been on the IL with a shoulder impingement before being activated Thursday, but he hadn't been his usual dominant self even before getting shut down -- so far in 2024 he has a 16.7 percent whiff rate, one of the lowest marks of his career and a massive drop from the 25.2 percent rate he delivered last year.       Rodriguez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday in an extra-inning loss to the White Sox.

      Advice: Rodriguez was hitless in his first three at-bats but came up big in his fourth trip to the plate, smashing a game-tying solo shot in the bottom of the ninth inning. The long ball was just his second across 17 contests since he went deep in back-to-back games May 25-26. Rodriguez has 16 thefts this season but has been fairly disappointing otherwise with just six homers, 26 RBI, 34 runs and a .268/.317/.354 slash line through 300 plate appearances.     • J-Rod hits game-tying homer in ninth vs. White Sox
      Julio Rodríguez hit a game-tying homer in the ninth inning against the White Sox, but the Mariners fell to Chicago in extra-innings.

      Advice: With the Mariners trailing 2-1, J-Rod obliterated a Michael Kopech fastball to right-center field that tied the game at 2-2. The outfielder now has six homers on the season; a disappointing total for a player who many (justifiably) thought would be among the league leaders in 2024.       Holmes (1-2) allowed two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss and a blown save in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Royals.

      Advice: Holmes was one out away from his 20th save of the season before serving up a two-run double to Maikel Garcia. The 31-year-old closer had gone nine straight appearances without allowing a run and still carries an impressive 1.80 ERA for the season. As the ninth-inning man for the club with the most wins in MLB, he remains one of the safest options at the position with his 19 saves being tied for third most this season.       Nestor Cortes pitched seven innings of two-run ball in a no-decision against the Royals on Thursday.

      Advice: Cortes turned in his best start in weeks, but he was still in line for the loss when he left. The Yankees offense did let him off the hook, but the Bombers still lost the game to fall to 6-9 in Cortes’s starts.       Clay Holmes took a blown save and a loss after giving up two runs and three hits in the ninth Thursday against the Royals.

      Advice: Holmes made his own trouble by botching the play at first base on the soft infield single that started the ninth. Another single followed, and then Maikel Garcia ended the game with a double that stayed just fair down the right field line.       Rizzo went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Royals.

      Advice: The first baseman snapped a streak of 27 games without a long ball when he took John Schreiber deep in the eighth inning. Rizzo received back-to-back days off earlier this week for a mental reset, and he entered Thursday's game in a 2-for-37 slump during June.       Advice: Cortes ran into some trouble in the fourth inning with two runs allowed but otherwise kept Kansas City off the board, pitching deep into yet another start. This was his fifth outing this season of seven or more innings, which is tied for the second most in the American League. The two strikeouts tied for a season low, and the veteran lefty has now gone four straight starts without a win.
