      Cubs manager Craig Counsell now says X-rays last night on Nico Hoerner’s hand came back “somewhat inconclusive,” and the second baseman is not playing in Friday’s game.

      Advice: It was originally reported that the X-rays came back negative after Hoerner was hit on the right hand by a pitch. Hoerner, though, had some trouble gripping the bat and swinging today.       Advice: Hoerner was struck by a pitch in the fourth inning Thursday but stayed in and finished that game. He underwent a precautionary X-ray afterward, which evidently came back clean.       Betts went 2-for-4 with two walks, a three-run home run and an additional run scored during Thursday's 11-7 win over the Pirates.

      Advice: Betts' three-run blast capped off a six-run fifth inning for the Dodgers and plated Miguel Vargas and Austin Barnes. Prior to Thursday's outburst, Betts had gone 1-for-24 (.042) across six games. Despite the minor cold spell, he owns the ninth-best OPS in MLB at .923 with 10 homers and nine stolen bases.       Lopez (5-6) took the loss against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing seven runs on four hits and six walks while striking out four batters over four innings.

      Advice: Lopez threw just 54 of 96 pitches for strikes and issued a season-high six walks -- more than he had handed out over his previous seven starts combined. Three of the free passes came to consecutive batters leading off the third frame, and all three of the recipients came around to score. The wildness was probably an aberration for Lopez considering his overall track record, but even when he's finding the strike zone, he's been struggling to get batters out.       Pablo Lopez allowed seven runs in four innings and took the loss against the Yankees on Thursday.

      Advice: Lopez gave up four hits, walked six and struck out four. It was a tough matchup against the Yankees, but Lopez was shaky in this one. He hit Austin Wells in the second inning and he scored on a home run by Trent Gresham. In the third inning, Lopez walked the bases loaded and all three of the runners ended up scoring. In the fourth inning, he walked Aaron Judge, who also ended up scoring. Lopez’ ERA is up to 5.45 on the season, but his xFIP is significantly lower at 3.42.       Mookie Betts went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer on Thursday, powering the Dodgers to an 11-7 victory over the Pirates.

      Advice: Betts capped off Los Angeles’ six-run explosion in the fifth inning with his 10th round-tripper of the season, taking Pirates reliever Ben Heller deep to center field. It was his second big fly in his last four games and first multi-hit effort since May 28. He also walked twice in this one.     • MRI reveals bone spur in Joe Musgrove’s elbow
      Joe Musgrove underwent an MRI that revealed a bone spur and contusion in his right elbow.

      Advice: Musgrove, who landed on the injured list last weekend with right elbow inflammation, received both a PRP and cortisone injections to address the issue and hopes to resume throwing in roughly two weeks. The 31-year-old righty told reporters arthroscopic surgery is possible if the issue doesn’t improve, but that’s not being considered as an option for now.       Musgrove has been diagnosed with a bone spur and a bone bruise in his right elbow, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Musgrove got PRP and cortisone injections with the hope of resuming throwing in two weeks. However, there is also the caveat that surgery will be required if healing does not occur. That leaves Musgrove's potential timeline to return to the mound unclear, though it would be surprising to see him back on the mound prior to the All-Star break based on this most recent news.
