      Schmidt (5-3) took the loss Sunday against the Padres after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings.

      Advice: Schmidt took a tough-luck loss in a game during which he took a shutout into the sixth inning. The first two batters in the frame would reach via an error and a walk before Schmidt turned things over to the bullpen. From there, Victor Gonzalez would allow both inherited runners to score. Schmidt registered a solid 16 whiffs on the afternoon and has recorded six or more strikeouts in five straight starts. The 28-year-old is showing signs of a legit breakout campaign and will carry a 2.52 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB (60.2 innings) into a projected matchup with the Giants this weekend.     • Handed first loss
      Suarez (9-1) yielded five runs (four earned) on three hits and four walks over six innings Sunday, striking out nine and taking a loss against the Rockies.

      Advice: Colorado pounced on Suarez early, plating two runs in the first inning and another three in the second. He was able to settle in for four shutout frames to finish the start, but the damage was already done. It was the first time this season he's issued more than two walks or allowed more than three runs. On a more positive note, Suarez generated a season-high 19 whiffs and improved his K:BB to 77:16 through 72 frames.     • Clarke Schmidt strikes out six in loss to Padres
      Clarke Schmidt pitched well in a losing effort against the Padres on Sunday afternoon, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits over his five-plus innings of work.

      Advice: The right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the afternoon while issuing three free passes. All of the damage done against him came in the sixth inning, as Schmidt began the inning by allowing Jake Cronenworth to reach on an error and then issuing a walk to Manny Machado. He then turned the ball over to the bullpen who allowed both inherited runners to score. Schmidt got 16 swinging strikes on 101 pitches on the day — 10 of those on his cutter — while posting a CSW of 28 percent.     • Ranger Suárez struggles with command in loss
      Ranger Suárez allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits in six innings in a loss to the Rockies on Sunday.

      Advice: Suárez struck out nine but also walked four and threw just 42 percent of pitches in the strike zone. He did rack up an impressive 39 percent whiff rate but he had just 12 called strikes on the day, compared to 19 whiffs. Given that this game was in Colorado, we can give Suárez a little bit of a pass; however, he might still be a solid sell-high candidate if a fantasy manager in your league values him as a top 20-25 starting pitcher the rest of the way.     • Yusei Kikuchi struggles through three innings
      Yusei Kikuchi was pulled after allowing five runs and eight hits in three innings Sunday against the Tigers.

      Advice: Kikuchi’s velocity was down 1.5 mph on this fastball and about 2.5 mph on his secondary pitches today, and he failed to record a strikeout against the 17 batters he faced. It was easily his worst performance of the year. Hopefully, the velocity drop can be explained by an illness or something else minor. Rotoworld Sunday, 12:27 pm
       
    • Roughed up in no-decision
      Kikuchi escaped Sunday's 14-11 loss to Detroit with a no-decision, yielding five earned runs on eight hits over just three innings. He did not record a walk or strikeout.

      Advice: Kikuchi got roughed up in this one, surrendering four extra-base hits including a solo home run to Spencer Torkelson. The five earned runs are a season high for Kikuchi, who entered this game on a four-game streak allowing two runs or fewer. The 32-year-old still sports a solid 3.25 ERA after Sunday's outing, but more regression could be coming if his 0.74 HR/9 normalizes to his career average of 1.56.       Buehler (1-2) took the loss to the Reds on Saturday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings.

      Advice: Buehler didn't have his best stuff in this one, as evidenced by the fact that he induced only six swings and misses on 91 pitches and also served up a pair of solo homers. It was a step backward from his previous outing, but this was just his third start back from Tommy John surgery, and ups and downs are to be expected after the long layoff. The 29-year-old righty will take a 4.26 ERA and 1.21 WHIP into his next start, which lines up for next weekend at home against the Rockies. Rotowire.com Sunday, 1:27 am

    • Another quality start Saturday
      Gilbert gave up one run on three hits over six innings in a no-decision against the Nationals on Saturday. He struck out four without walking a batter.

      Advice: Gilbert allowed a run in the second inning on a couple singles, a stolen base and a sacrifice fly, but that was the extent of the damage. While his efforts weren't rewarded with a win, Gilbert continued his run of strong pitching with a third consecutive quality start since his eight-run hiccup in Minnesota on May 9.
