    • Cubs put Javier Assad on IL with forearm strain
      Cubs placed RHP Javier Assad on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain.

      Advice: Assad struggled on Sunday in a loss to the Mets and also failed to record a single strikeout. Now we might know why. The Cubs haven’t issued a timeline for Assad’s injury, but forearm strains can often be a precursor to bigger injuries, so the team is liable to be careful with the right-hander.     • Hits IL with strained forearm
      The Cubs placed Assad on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right forearm extensor strain, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

      Advice: The injury has evidently been an issue for Assad off and on for about two weeks, per Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune, which could help explain why he's stumbled in June with a 5.49 ERA after entering the month with a 2.27 mark.     • Struggles again Wednesday
      Gil (9-3) took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two batters over 4.1 innings.

      Advice: Gil was stung by both hard hits and walks -- three of the four knocks he allowed went for extra bases, and he also surrendered four free passes. His final two walks were particularly detrimental, as both runners came around to score following his departure. Gil has now put forward two straight poor outings, giving up 12 runs over 5.2 innings across his past two starts. He had a 2.02 ERA and was being mentioned in discussions about AL Cy Young Award contenders after a June 14 win against Boston, but his subsequent struggles have increased is ERA by over a run to 3.15.     • Luis Gil struggles again in loss
      Luis Gil labored through 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Mets. He allowed five earned runs with four walks and just two strikeouts.

      Advice: There’s been a hard shift in Gil’s season over the past week. He gave up 18 ER in his first 80 innings and 12 ER in his last 5 2/3 frames. He looked uncomfortable and weirdly enough, these last two starts he threw his lowest percentage of fastballs and two of his three highest percentages of changeups in any start this season. It’s important to note that he threw only 136 2/3 innings between 2021 and 2023, so the 85 2/3 he’s already thrown this season are already substantial given his lengthy injury history.

      Lopez (6-2) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out five over five innings to earn the win in Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals.

      Advice: By his lofty standards this season, this wasn't a great performance for Lopez, but it was still enough for his third straight win. He hadn't allowed a run over his last two starts, and he's walked multiple batters just twice in his last seven outings. The right-hander is now at a 1.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 81:27 K:BB through 79.1 innings over 14 starts in 2024. His next start is projected to be at home versus the Giants.     • Reynaldo López holds Cardinals to two runs in win
      Reynaldo López defeated the Cardinals by allowing two runs in five innings in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.

      Advice: López certainly wasn’t at his sharpest today, but the Cardinals came away with just one run each time they loaded the bases against him. The Braves had bullpen help ready to go the latter time, when Brendon Donovan was up with two outs in the fifth.     • Allows four runs in loss
      Suarez (10-2) took the loss against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing four runs on nine hits and no walks with four strikeouts over six innings.

      Advice: Suarez opened with four scoreless innings but ran into trouble in the fifth, allowing four runs on five hits in the frame. He rebounded with a scoreless sixth but departed with a 4-0 deficit. This was just the second time Suarez allowed four earned runs in an outing this season, as he had allowed only four total earned runs in 20.1 June innings prior to Tuesday. The southpaw owns a 2.01 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 99:19 K:BB this season and lines up for another start this weekend, this one against the Marlins. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 8:05 pm

      Irvin (6-4) took the loss against the Guardians on Tuesday, allowing eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits with no walks and one strikeout over four innings.

      Advice: Irvin allowed three runs in the first two innings and then five runs in a disastrous fifth frame that included a three-run home run by Jose Ramirez. An error in the fifth resulted in four of the runs being unearned, but the lefty allowed 10 hard-hit balls and only generated five swinging strikes in his second consecutive rough outing. Irvin has yielded 13 runs (nine earned) in those two outings and now owns a 3.74 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 74:15 K:BB in 77 innings this season.     • Dominates for ninth win
      Skubal (9-3) tossed seven scoreless innings to earn the win Tuesday against the Phillies. He allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven.

      Advice: Skubal came into Tuesday in a bit of a slump, as he had allowed nine runs (eight earned) across 10.1 total innings in his previous two starts, which were both losses. The lefty got back on track in a big way, however, with a dominant performance against a tough Philadelphia lineup. It was the sixth time this season that Skubal didn't allow any runs in an outing, which is a big reason why he's sitting with a 2.32 ERA, good for fourth in the majors. Detroit's ace is having an outstanding year, and he'll look to keep rolling in his next scheduled appearance, which is tentatively set for next Tuesday against the Twins. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 7:44 pm
