• Gerrit Cole wins, rights ship against Blue Jays
Gerrit Cole scattered three hits and a walk across five innings on Sunday in an 8-1 win over the Blue Jays. He allowed one run and struck out six.

Advice: This was the first time this season Cole looked like himself. His fastball velocity was much more consistent than it had been in either of his first two starts and he showed no hesitation in challenging the Blue Jays hitters with it. He also showed better command of his secondaries and the Yankees let him work all the way up to 90 pitches. While not perfect, this was the kind of start we needed to see from Cole. • Josh Winckowski goes five scoreless for victory
Josh Winckowski blanked the Padres for five innings to pick a victory in his start Sunday.

Advice: It’s his first win in nine starts dating back to Aug. 5, 2022. Winckowski generated quite a bit of soft contact today, which was important since he had just three missed swings and one strikeout. Interestingly, all three missed swings came on the slider that he threw just seven times in the 58-pitch outing. Winckowski should stay in the rotation for now, but he has a very tough matchup coming up against the Yankees in New York. Rotoworld 40 minutes ago

  • Matt Waldron pulled in fifth in loss to Red Sox
Matt Waldron yielded four runs — three earned — in 4 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Red Sox.

Advice: Waldron didn’t seem to have his best knuckler today, and the Red Sox wound up with eight hard-hit balls against him, including a pair of homers. This snaps a string of six straight quality starts for Waldron. He hadn’t pitched fewer than five innings or allowed more than two runs in nine starts since May 5. Rotoworld 41 minutes ago

  • Kevin Gausman loses, struggles again
Kevin Gausman allowed seven runs in just 4 1/3 innings on Sunday against the Yankees. He walked five and struck out seven in a loss.

Advice: Gausman just hasn’t been right all year. Aaron Judge crushed a first-inning fastball that wasn’t up-and-in enough and the Yankees kept traffic on the bases seemingly every inning. His tried and true game plan of fastballs and splitters does not have the same potency it used to as his fastball velocity has dipped and hitters don’t chase or whiff on that splitter like they once did. • Drawing another start
Contreras will start Thursday's game against the Athletics in Oakland, Doug Padilla of The Orange County Register reports.

Advice: The Angels will get Jose Soriano (abdomen) back from the injured list Tuesday, but with Patrick Sandoval (elbow) getting ruled out for the season last week and with Zach Plesac getting sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday, Contreras and Davis Daniel will both get at least one more turn through the rotation. Since he had been working exclusively out of the bullpen this season before being called upon to start last Wednesday in Anaheim versus the Athletics, Contreras was capped at three innings and 61 pitches in the outing. Though he likely won't be stretched out quite enough to handle a typical starter's workload, Contreras should at least be able to give the Angels five innings if he's more efficient with his pitch count in the rematch with Oakland. • Spins five shutout innings
Winckowski (2-1) picked up the win Sunday vs the Padres. He did not allow a run in five innings, gave up four hits and struck out one.

Advice: Winckowski was efficient in his spot start, as he only needed 58 pitches to get through five innings. It was Winckowski's fourth start of the season and his first since early May. It will be interesting to see if Winckowski keeps a spot in the rotation as he continues to impress in whichever role. The 26-year-old pitched six innings in relief in his last appearance and now backs it up with another quality showing. He's lowered his ERA to 2.80 and is scheduled to face the Yankees next. • Taj Bradley strikes out 11 in win
Taj Bradley blanked the Nationals over 5 2/3 innings in a 5-0 win on Sunday. He struck out 11 and walked two.

Advice: Bradley was dominant in this one. The 11 punch outs matched his season-high and the Nationals were helpless against his terrific fastball. Living in the top of the zone, it forced 10 swings and misses and brilliantly set up his diving splitter. Bradley looks every bit the top-end starter he was billed as. Rotoworld Today, 1:08 pm

  • Patrick Corbin gets through six innings in loss
Patrick Corbin allowed four earned runs across six frames on Sunday against the Rays. He struck out five and walked one in a losing effort.

Advice: The Rays smacked Corbin around in this one and he was fortunate to give up just four runs. The Rays had 12 hard-hit balls, nine of which were hit harder than 100 MPH. He’s earned every bit of his 5.49 ERA this season. Rotoworld Today, 1:04 pm
  • Returns from 7-day injured list
Double-A Richmond reinstated McDonald (groin) from its 7-day injured list Sunday.

Advice: McDonald has resided on Richmond's IL all season but is finally ready to join the Giants' Eastern League affiliate after an extended rehab assignment that first kicked off May 14. In 10 total outings between the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and High-A Eugene covering 24.1 innings, McDonald turned in a 4.44 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB. Rotowire.com Today, 12:17 pm
