    • Lands on IL with hamstring strain
The Red Sox placed Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left hamstring strain.

Advice: Gonzalez was one of two Boston infielders to hit the shelf Sunday with a hamstring injury, as Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) was also deactivated. The lefty-hitting Enmanuel Valdez is expected to occupy the strong side of a platoon at second base while Grissom is on the IL, but Gonzalez might have been the preferred option at the keystone against left-handed pitching had he not strained his hamstring. Jamie Westbrook -- whose contract was selected from Triple-A Worcester on Sunday -- now profiles as a likely platoon mate for Valdez at second base. Rotowire.com 51 minutes ago

    • Placed on IL
Pittsburgh placed Williams on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right wrist sprain, retroactive to May 30.

Advice: Williams will hit the injured list and be moved off the active roster after being called up to the Pirates earlier this May. This move will concurrently bring righty Quinn Priester up to the majors in time to get the start on the bump Sunday. Rotowire.com 54 minutes ago

    • Moves to IL
The Red Sox placed Grissom (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list Sunday.

Advice: Though the right hamstring strain that forced Grissom out of Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers is considered mild, he'll still need at least a week and a half to make a full recovery from the injury before rejoining Boston's 26-man active roster. The Red Sox selected the contract of Jamie Westbrook from Triple-A Worcester to bolster the team's depth in the middle infield in the short term, but Enmanuel Valdez and David Hamilton may be more likely options to pick up starts at second base while Grissom is on the mend. • Playing in ACL
Perdomo started at shortstop and went 1-for-3 with a run scored for the Diamondbacks' entry in the Arizona Complex League on Saturday.

Advice: Perdomo, who played five innings in the field, made his second ACL appearance after getting four at-bats Friday as the designated hitter. The organization's plan calls for Perdomo to finish out the weekend in the ACL then move to a minor-league affiliate. A return later in the week is a possibility. Rotowire.com Today, 5:33 am

    • Contributes to win
Alexander started at second base and went 2-for-5 with a stolen base, an RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 10-5 win over the Mets.

Advice: Alexander made his first start in five days and had a hand in both runs scored in the sixth inning. After singling in a run, he stole second base, advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Alexander's playing time dwindled during May -- a month in which he batted .184 with just 38 at-bats -- and he could be in danger of losing a roster spot once Geraldo Perdomo (knee) returns. • Huge day against Detroit
Valdez went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and three RBI in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Tigers.

Advice: Getting the start at DH and batting fifth, Valdez tormented Matt Olson and took him deep in the second and sixth innings, adding a two-bagger in between for good measure. It was the 25-year-old infielder's first start since being called back up from Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, but with Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) headed back to the IL after leaving Saturday's game early, the path is clear for Valdez to see regular action at second base for at least the next couple weeks, perhaps on the strong side of a platoon with Romy Gonzalez. Valdez is batting just .179 (17-for-95) in the majors this year, but he's having a breakout season in the power department, slugging four homers in 31 games for Boston and adding six in 20 games for Worcester. • Casey Schmitt goes 2-for-4, homers in loss
Casey Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer on Saturday in the Giants’ loss to the Yankees.

Advice: Schmitt slashed San Francisco’s early deficit in half by taking Yankees starter Cody Poteet deep to left-center field in the third inning. It was his first round-tripper of the season. He was the lone Giants’ batter to reach base more than once during Saturday’s one-sided affair at Oracle Park as Yankees starter Cody Poteet and a quartet of relievers limited them to just five hits combined. • Perfect at plate in win
Schuemann went 4-for-4 with an RBI single, a double and three runs in a win over Atlanta on Saturday.

Advice: The rookie shortstop was a thorn in the side of Atlanta pitching all night, putting together a stellar night out of the bottom of the order. Schuemann gave his average a 28-point boost to .266 with the multi-hit effort, his third in the last eight contests. He's also scored at least one run in five consecutive games, and his prolific performance Saturday also included his first game over the last eight without a strikeout. • Swipes two bases Saturday
Bliss went 1-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases and three runs in a 9-0 win against the Angels on Saturday.

Advice: Bliss made a big contribution from the No. 9 slot in the batting order, reaching base three times and scoring three of the Mariners' nine runs. The infielder probably wasn't in many fantasy lineups, but he made a big impact for managers who rolled with him by swiping a pair of bags. Speed is a big part of Bliss's game -- he swiped 28 bags in 50 games for Triple-A Tacoma this season after stealing 55 bases in 70 attempts in the minors last year. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:50 pm
