  • Aaron Civale gives up four runs in no-decision
    Aaron Civale gave up four runs over 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday in a no-decision against the Twins.

    Advice: Civale didn’t end up factoring into the decision as he was long gone before an extended rain delay ground this one to a halt. He managed to keep the ball in the yard, but still surrendered seven hits, and was unable to escape the fourth inning. He finished with five strikeouts and issued a pair of walks. He’ll bring a lackluster 5.42 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 79/22 K/BB ratio across 76 1/3 innings (15 starts) into a road matchup on Sunday against the Pirates. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:12 am
     
  • Grabs 16th save
    Diaz earned the save in Tuesday's 2-1 win over Pittsburgh, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

    Advice: Diaz made quick work of the middle of the Pirates' order Tuesday, logging his 16th save of the year. The right-hander has now converted his last nine save opportunities despite allowing three runs (two earned) over his prior three innings.   • Nestor Cortes blanks O’s for six innings in win
    Nestor Cortes pitched six scoreless innings while striking out six to earn the win on Tuesday against the Orioles.

    Advice: Cortes needed 25 pitches to get through the first inning, thanks in part to back-to-back singles by Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle. He would eventually settle in to pitch six scoreless innings without walking a batter. The five hits Cortes allowed all came on singles as he did everything within reason to hold a powerful Orioles lineup in check.   • Alexis Díaz earns 16th save on Tuesday
    Alexis Díaz pitched a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a 2-1 win over the Pirates on Tuesday.

    Advice: The save was Díaz’s 16th of the season and fifth in the month of June. It was a nice rebound from his tough outing against the Brewers last time out and Díaz has now thrown a scoreless inning in eight of his last 11 appearances. The bigger key for the 27-year-old was that he didn’t walk a batter in this outing, only the second time in June he’s accomplished that.   • Justin Verlander heads to IL with neck discomfort
    Astros placed RHP Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 16, with neck discomfort.

    Advice: Houston’s decision to put Verlander on the shelf doesn’t come as much of a surprise after skipper Joe Espada told reporters earlier on Tuesday that the 41-year-old veteran was progressing “slower than expected” in his recovery from a lingering neck issue, which has been bothering him for a couple weeks now. He’ll get an extended break in an effort to put the issue to bed. No word yet on how the Astros will fill his spot in their injury-depleted starting rotation moving forward.   • Moves to injured list
    The Astros placed Verlander on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Sunday, due to neck discomfort.

    Advice: Manager Joe Espada said earlier Tuesday that the veteran right-hander was progressing slower than expected from the neck discomfort that scratched him from Saturday's scheduled start, and he'll be sidelined for at least a couple turns through the rotation.   • Progressing slowly
    Astros manager Joe Espada said Tuesday that Verlander's (neck) progress has been "slower than we expected," Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

    Advice: Verlander was scratched of his most recently scheduled start this past weekend against the Tigers because of neck discomfort. The club had been hoping he would be ready to start Thursday versus the White Sox, and while Espada didn't seem to officially rule Verlander out for the series finale in Chicago, he now appears likely to be pushed back again. Houston could have Spencer Arrighetti and Ronel Blanco both move up a day to start on Thursday and Friday, respectively, which would keep both pitchers on their typical four days' rest. The arrangement would also give Verlander a couple extra days to heal up if the team thinks he could take the ball Saturday versus the Orioles.     Astros manager Joe Espada told reporters Tuesday that Justin Verlander (neck) may not be ready to start Thursday against the White Sox.

    Advice: Espada said that Verlander’s progress from his neck injury is going “slower than expected.” The right-hander was scratched from his start against the Tigers on Saturday because of that discomfort, and while there was hope he could make his next scheduled trip to the mound, that’s very much in doubt.     Bednar pitched a perfect ninth inning to pick up the save against the Reds in Monday's 4-1 win.

    Advice: After serving up homers in each of his last two appearances, Bednar got back on track with a clean frame Monday. Bednar had a disastrous start to the season with 14 earned runs allowed in his first 13 outings, but he's turned it around with a 1.88 ERA over his last 19.1 innings. Despite the 5.34 ERA for the season, Bednar remains one of the better late-inning options, as his 15 saves are tied for eighth most in the majors. Rotowire.com Monday, 7:55 pm
