    • Max Scherzer (thumb) to make rehab start Sunday
      Max Scherzer will make a rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday.

      Advice: It will be interesting to see how quickly the Rangers let Scherzer return from the minors. The 39-year-old has made a total of six minor league rehab starts during his 16-year career and never more than two during one IL stay. One would think a typical pitcher would get three or four in his situation (he missed the entire spring after back surgery and then made rehab start in April before injuring his thumb).     • Resuming rehab assignment Sunday
      Scherzer (back/arm) will resume a rehab assignment with Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

      Advice: Scherzer had to be pulled off his initial rehab assignment in early May following a nerve problem with his throwing arm, but he's been trending in the right direction in recent weeks after receiving a cortisone injection. The 39-year-old was initially placed on the injured list due to his recovery from offseason back surgery. Scherzer threw 40 pitches in a live batting practice session earlier this week, so he should be ready for at least that many pitches Sunday.     • Twirls six scoreless innings
      Woo (3-0) picked up the win Thursday, allowing two hits and no walks with six strikeouts across six scoreless innings against Oakland.

      Advice: Woo threw a season-high 85 pitches Thursday, an encouraging sign for the 24-year-old after he missed all of April with elbow inflammation and exited his first start after his IL stint with forearm tightness. Even with a restricted pitch count, the right-hander has generated four consecutive quality starts and has fired 12 straight scoreless innings, giving him a 1.07 ERA and 24:2 K:BB through 33.2 innings.     • Takes second loss
      Assad (4-2) allowed five runs on seven hits across 5.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Reds. He walked two and struck out seven.

      Advice: Assad flashed his skill with the seven strikeouts, which tied for his second most in a game this year, but he was ultimately done in by a three-run Elly De La Cruz home run in the third inning. The righty still has a solid 2.74 ERA and 68 strikeouts across 69 innings this season, as he's performed well in his first extended run as a full-time starter for the Cubs.     • Assad allows five in loss to Reds Thursday
      Javier Assad allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings and took the loss against the Reds on Thursday.



      Advice: Assad gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. He was replaced by Luke Little in a 4-4 game in the sixth inning and the run that scored on TJ Friedl’s RBI double was charged to Assad. The five earned runs were the most allowed in any start by Assad this year. His ERA is now 2.74, but his xFIP is significantly higher at 3.98.     • Bryan Woo blanks Athletics to lower ERA to 1.07
      Bryan Woo blanked the Athletics over six innings with six strikeouts in a 3-0 win for the Mariners on Thursday.

      Advice: Woo allowed just two hits without walking anyone. The right-hander has been spectacular since returning from the injured list, and the six scoreless frames lower his ERA to a miniscule 1.07 on the season. Woo has been able to take advantage of some poor lineups thus far, but there’s simply no denying these kinds of results. He should have no trouble against the White Sox next week.     • Quality start in loss
      Cease (5-5) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk while striking out six over six innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Angels.

      Advice: Cease took his third loss in five outings. He was done in by the long ball again, as Nolan Schanuel took him deep to lead off the bottom of the first inning and Zach Neto added a two-run blast in the second. Cease has surrendered six homers during his five-start winless stretch. The right-hander is now at a 3.51 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 93:22 K:BB over 77 innings across 13 starts this season. He's not having a bad year by any means -- his 2.6 BB/9 is the best of his career. Cease will look to snap his skid in his next start, tentatively projected to be at home versus the Athletics.     • Registers another quality start
      Berrios allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two batters over six innings in a no-decision against Baltimore on Wednesday.

      Advice: Berrios didn't do much in the strikeout department with just two punchouts, but he was nonetheless very effective in recording his fifth straight quality start. The right-hander has just one win during that span but has put up a very solid 2.73 ERA. Aside from an eight-run, 3.2 inning blowup against Philadelphia on May 7, Berrios has been a model of consistency this season, allowing three or fewer runs in each of his other 12 starts.     • Receives little help in loss
      Gilbert (3-4) allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out five without walking a batter over seven innings, but he took the loss Wednesday versus the Athletics.

      Advice: Gilbert can be partly to blame for this loss, as his throwing error on a pickoff attempt put Daz Cameron in position to score on a passed ball in the fifth inning. The Mariners' lack of offense was the other problem, which led to Gilbert taking his fourth loss in his last six outings. He's turned in a quality start in four of those games despite the lack of wins. The right-hander is at a 3.12 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 76:20 K:BB through 83.2 innings over 13 starts this season.
