• Idle against southpaw
McCarthy is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Tigers.

Advice: The lefty-hitting McCarthy will give way to Randal Grichuk in right field Friday as Detroit trots out the left-handed Tarik Skubal. McCarthy is 2-for-15 (.133) at the plate since May 5. Rotowire.com Today, 12:20 pm

  • Out of lineup Friday
Kermaier is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against Tampa Bay.

Advice: The left-handed batter will start from the dugout with the Blue Jays facing southpaw Tyler Alexander. Daulton Varsho will start in center field and bat seventh in place of Kiermaier with Davis Schneider and George Springer rounding out Toronto's outfield. Rotowire.com Today, 12:17 pm

  • Not in Friday's lineup
Young is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in Philadelphia.

Advice: Young had started eight of the last nine contests, including six of them from the leadoff spot. He'll get a breather Friday, though, as Victor Robles patrols center field for the Nationals. Rotowire.com Today, 12:16 pm

  • Losing playing time
Mullins is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Advice: Mullins will be on the bench for the third time in the last five games despite the O's facing a right-handed pitcher Friday. The left-handed Mullins is amid a massive slump, batting .085 with a 30.2 percent strikeout rate in 63 plate appearances since April 22. Colton Cowser has been earning more work in center field and will start there Friday while Kyle Stowers and Ryan O'Hearn fill out the outfield. Rotowire.com Today, 12:11 pm

  • Activated from IL
Gallo (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Advice: As expected, Gallo will return to the big-league roster after being placed on the 10-day IL on April 27 with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder. In a corresponding move, Trey Lipscomb was optioned to Triple-A Rochester. Before the injury, Gallo was seeing most of his work in right field, and he should continue to play in right since Lane Thomas (knee) is still sidelined. Rotowire.com Today, 11:43 am

  • Makes splash in minors return
Butler, optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, made his minor-league debut in Thursday's win over El Paso and went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

Advice: Butler drew the start in center field in his first minor-league game of 2024 and made an instant impact while working out of the No. 2 spot in the order. Butler had a much different experience against big-league arms (.170/.273/.264), so he'll presumably need to have an extended stretch of success at the Triple-A level to earn a promotion. • Not in Friday's lineup
Taylor is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Cubs, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: Taylor started the previous four games but will receive a day off after he went 2-for-13 with a double, two runs and five strikeouts during that stretch. Jack Suwinski will shift to center field Friday while Connor Joe starts in right. Rotowire.com Today, 8:25 am
  • Nabs fourth steal
Taylor went 0-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base in Thursday's extra-innings win over the Phillies.

Advice: Getting the start in center field and hitting leadoff, Taylor didn't have much success at the plate but took advantage in the eighth inning when he reached on a Bryson Stott error, swiping second base and coming around to score on a Harrison Bader single. Taylor has seen sporadic playing time of late as the Mets' fourth outfielder, and through 91 plate appearances on the season he's slashing .256/.278/.372 with two homers, four steals, 10 runs and 13 RBI. • Heyward (back) done with rehab
Jason Heyward (back) has finished rehabbing his lower back issue that has sidelined him since late March.

Advice: Heyward was with the team at Dodgers Stadium on Thursday and manager Dave Roberts told reporters he will be activated soon. It remains a question what the corresponding move for Heyward’s activation will be. Enrique Hernandez and Chris Taylor have both struggled this season, but they can also play multiple positions and Taylor is owed $13 million in 2025. James Outman was a revelation last year, but he has options remaining and is hitting .147 this year. Outman could be the de facto choice. Heyward slashed .269/.340/.473 in 124 games with the Dodgers last year. Rotoworld Today, 6:58 am
