• Clean ninth inning
Chapman struck out two without allowing a baserunner across a scoreless ninth inning against the Reds on Wednesday.

Advice: Chapman entered the game in the ninth inning with a five-run lead, marking his first appearance since Saturday. He struggled to begin the season but has pitched well for significant stretches, most recently allowing two earned runs across 8.2 innings in June while posting a 13:4K:BB. Chapman should see most of Pittsburgh's save chances while David Bednar (oblique) is sidelined. Rotowire.com Today, 6:11 am
  • Heads back to minors
The Pirates optioned Bruihl to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.

Advice: Bruihl made one appearance during his most recent stint in the majors, allowing two runs while recording just one out. The Pirates will announce a corresponding move prior to Friday's game in Atlanta. Rotowire.com Today, 6:09 am
  • Matt Manning working on delivery at Triple-A
Matt Manning was not called up when the Tigers needed a starter this week because he’s working on tweaking his delivery at Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: “Matty is still working on delivery,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He’s still working on execution. There are plenty of things that we still want him to do.” One of those things is likely getting left-handed hitters out. Between MLB and Triple-A action combined, left-handed hitters are hitting .304 off Manning with a .893 OPS. The 26-year-old has a 4.88 ERA with 12 walks and 23 strikeouts across 27⅔ innings in five appearances for the Tigers this season and a 5.68 ERA with 13 walks and 42 strikeouts across 38 innings in eight games for the Mud Hens. “We also want the guys down in Triple-A to not assume, as well,” said Hinch. “You gotta give opportunity to guys that you feel good about. It’s not just one person because we’re used to it. He’s still got to earn his way like everybody else.” It sounds like Manning still has work to do before he earns another chance. • Fans seven in no-decision
Wesneski did not factor into the decision in a loss to the Giants on Wednesday, allowing three runs on two hits and one walk over four innings while striking out seven.

Advice: Wesneski got off to a solid start, striking out four of the first six batters he faced before surrendering back-to-back home runs to Michael Conforto and David Villar in the second. The right-hander would go 1-2-3 through the next two innings before being relieved by Drew Smyly to open the fifth, though the former would still finish with his second-highest strikeout total of the season. It also marked Wesneski's longest outing since May 8 against the Padres when he went six innings. Rotowire.com Today, 6:03 am
  • Saturday start being discussed
Gallen (hamstring) could start Saturday against Oakland if Thursday's bullpen session goes well, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports.

Advice: Thursday's bullpen session will the second one thrown by Gallen, who also has a couple of simulated games under his belt during rehab. The right-hander hasn't thrown in game conditions since May 30, when he threw just six pitches before being removed. Rotowire.com Today, 5:36 am

  • Crushed for six runs
Nelson (5-6) was charged with the loss against Minnesota on Wednesday, allowing six runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings while striking out three.

Advice: After pitching a scoreless first inning, Nelson went on to get tagged for runs in each of the next three frames before being relieved by Scott McGough with two outs in the fourth. The second inning was especially disastrous for the 26 year old when he failed to retire either of the first four batters he faced and also beaned Byron Buxton and Willi Castro with pitches. Nelson has now allowed at least five runs in two of his last four starts, while Wednesday marked the first time he's given up 10 or more hits since May 17 against Detroit. Rotowire.com Today, 5:24 am
  • Ryne Nelson hit for six runs in loss to Twins
Ryne Nelson allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Twins on Wednesday.

Advice: After a scoreless first inning, Nelson loaded the bases with two singles and a hit batter before Jose Miranda cleared them all with a double to bring in three runs. Two more hits and a sacrifice fly plated a fourth run for Minnesota in the third. Nelson would allow two more runs to score in the fourth before he was relieved with two outs. The 26-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 5.69 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, and a 46/18 K/BB ratio across 68 innings. He’s in line for a start against the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Tuesday. • Camilo Doval locks down 14th save vs. Cubs
Camilo Doval struck out one batter in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Advice: Doval was summoned to close out the game with a one-run lead in the ninth inning. He gave up a leadoff single, but stranded the runner with a strikeout, fly out, and a groundout to secure the win and lock down his 14th save. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:15 pm
  • Hayde Wesneski strikes out seven in no-decision
Hayden Wesneski surrendered three runs with seven strikeouts over four innings in a no-decision against the Giants on Wednesday.

Advice: All three of the runs Wesneski allowed came on a pair of homers in the second inning. With a runner on, Michael Conforto took him deep for a two-run shot to put the Giants on the board. David Villar followed with a solo shot to go back-to-back. Wesneski retired all six batters in the third and fourth innings before his day was done. He struck out seven. The 26-year-old right-hander owns a 3.60 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and a 44/16 K/BB ratio across 45 innings. He’ll likely revert to the bullpen for long relief duties. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:13 pm
