• Josh Hader slams door on Tigers on Friday night
Josh Hader picked up his fifth save of the season on Friday night, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a three-run advantage against the Tigers.

Advice: After struggling for most of the season, Hader recorded saves on back-to-back nights for the first time all season. The 30-year-old southpaw did issue a two-out walk to Jake Rogers after getting Ryan Vilade on a swinging-third strike, Javier Baez on a fly ball to center, but he battled back to get Andy Ibanez on strikes to end it. He has now converted five of his first six save chances with an impressive 27/8 K/BB ratio over 17 innings on the year — it’s just the 5.29 ERA that looks horribly out of place. • Framber Valdez defeats Tigers to improve to 2-1
Framber Valdez pitched well in Friday night’s victory over the Tigers, allowing only two runs on six hits over seven frames.

Advice: Valdez walked two and punched out four on the night. He surrendered a two-run double to Matt Vierling in the third inning, but kept the Tigers’ off the board the remainder of his night — affording his offense the opportunity to come back and earn him a win, which they finally did in the eighth inning. The 30-year-old southpaw got 10 swings and misses on 103 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 23 percent. He’ll look to replicate this fine outing as he carries a 3.64 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and a 23/9 K/BB ratio (29 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Athletics. Rotoworld 31 minutes ago
  • Casey Mize logs quality start in no-decision
Casey Mize logged a quality start in a tough-luck no-decision on Friday night, holding the Astros to just one run on five hits over six strong innings of work.

Advice: The 27-year-old right-hander also issued a pair of free passes while striking out two batters on the night. The lone tally against him came on a solo blast off the bat of Kyle Tucker in the sixth inning. Aside from that, Mize was in complete command. He got 10 swings and misses on 88 pitches on the night — five on his heater which averaged 95.5 mph — while posting a CSW of 20 percent. Mize has actually pitched well through his first seven starts, compiling a 3.58 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 26/9 K/BB ratio over 37 2/3 innings of work. He’ll do battle against the Marlins his next time out at home on Wednesday. Rotoworld 31 minutes ago

  • Joey Estes will start for Athletics on Saturday
Athletics’ manager Mark Kotsay told reporters on Friday that Joey Estes will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to start on Saturday.

Advice: That means that everyone else in the A’s rotation will get pushed back a day, with Alex Wood moving from Saturday to Sunday. Estes, 22, holds a 6.04 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a 26/10 K/BB ratio over 28 1/3 innings in six starts at the Triple-A level this season. He’s not a recommended streaming option against the Mariners on Saturday. Rotoworld 42 minutes ago
  • Bobby Miller (shoulder) throws sim game Thursday
Bobby Miller (shoulder) threw two innings in a simulated game on Thursday without any issues.

Advice: The 25-year-old right-hander will repeat the process on Sunday. If all goes well then, he could be cleared to face hitters in a live bullpen session. He’s making slow and methodical progress in his recovery from inflammation in his right shoulder and could potentially be ready to rejoin the Dodgers’ rotation at the end of the month if everything goes according to plan. • Optioned to Triple-A
Lynch was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Friday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Lynch will return to Omaha after tossing five scoreless innings in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Rangers and two perfect innings in Thursday's 10-4 win against the Angels. With Alec Marsh (elbow) being activated Friday, Lynch was the odd man out in Kansas City and he'll now have to wait for his next chance to join the major-league roster. The left-hander has struggled to a 5.86 ERA over 27.2 innings in six starts at Triple-A this season and he'll look to find a groove ahead of his next call up down the road. • Clears IL
The Royals reinstated Marsh (elbow) from the 15-day injured list Friday.

Advice: Marsh made his lone rehab start with Triple-A Omaha on May 5, striking out six and giving up one hit and one walk over four shutout innings while throwing 53 pitches. To make room for Marsh, the Royals optioned southpaw Daniel Lynch to Triple-A Omaha. Marsh will take the mound and start in Friday's series opener against the Angels. Rotowire.com Today, 4:14 pm
  • Will start Saturday
Estes will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to start Saturday's game against the Mariners, Martin Gallegos of MLB.comreports.

Advice: Estes has accumulated a 6.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across 28.1 innings in Triple-A, but he will come up from the minors for his season debut nonetheless. The 22-year-old right-hander gave up eight earned runs in major-league innings last season, and he isn't a recommended streaming option for Saturday. Rotowire.com Today, 3:47 pm
  • Set for another outing
Smith (shoulder) is slated for an appearance for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Smith started his rehab assignment with Syracuse on Wednesday, giving up a solo home run in the eighth inning while throwing 13 pitches. Smith is progressing through right shoulder inflammation that landed him on the 15-day IL on April 17. Rotowire.com Today, 3:45 pm
