  • Strikes out nine in quality start
    Cortes did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk over 6.1 innings against the Tigers. He struck out nine.

    Advice: Cortes matched a season high with nine strikeouts as he allowed only four baserunners in the contest. Cortes shut out the Tigers through six but was pulled with one out in the seventh after allowing two base hits in the inning. Both runners eventually came around to score, tying the game and ending Cortes' bid to earn his second win. It was the fourth quality start in eight games for Cortes, who lowered his ERA to 3.72 with a 1.03 WHIP and 46 strikeouts through 48.1 innings.   • Blanks Rangers over five frames
    Lynch tossed five scoreless innings, walking two batters and allowing two hits while striking out six in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Rangers. He did not factor into the decision.

    Advice: Lynch was promoted from Triple-A Omaha ahead of Sunday's start and he certainly stepped up his game, blanking the defending champs over five frames. The left-hander was able to work around three baserunners in the first inning to set the tone and ultimately went on to pitch four more scoreless innings in his first major-league outing of the year. Lynch could remain in the starting rotation for Kansas City for the time being with Alec Marsh (elbow) still unavailable.     Canning (1-4) took the loss Sunday against Cleveland, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk across six innings. He struck out five.

    Advice: Canning kept a clean sheet until the sixth inning when Jose Ramirez launched a two-run home run to cap off a 10-pitch at-bat. The long ball was the first Griffin has surrendered in over 20 innings, dating back to an April 13 start against Boston. Griffin completed six innings for the first time all year, notching a quality start and giving up five or fewer hits for a fourth straight outing. he's set up to face the Royals on Friday.     Skubal did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings against the Yankees. He struck out 12.

    Advice: Skubal continues to dominate as the 12 strikeouts were a season high and marked the first double-digit strikeout effort of the campaign for the ace lefty. It was the sixth time in seven games Skubal has allowed two or fewer earned runs, as the outing raised his ERA to 1.90 with a 0.77 WHIP and 53 strikeouts over 42.2 innings.     Carrasco (2-2) earned the win Sunday, allowing one run on six hits and two walks over six innings against the Angels. He struck out three.

    Advice: Carrasco got back on track with his first quality start of 2024, rebounding from a pair of poor starts leading up to the outing where he combined for 13 earned runs over nine innings. If you erase Carrasco's two-start hiccup, he owns a 2.92 era over 24.2 innings with a 19:14 K:BB.   • MacKenzie Gore gives up grand slam in poor outing
    MacKenzie Gore lasted only three innings and allowed six runs — two earned — and six hits Sunday against the Blue Jays.

    Advice: It was Gore’s own error that led to all of the unearned runs. Gore’s secondary pitches weren’t working today; he got just one missed swing on his 32 non-fastballs, and it was a changeup, after three straight fastballs, that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit for a grand slam in the second.   • Alek Manoah tagged for seven runs in 2024 debut
    Making his 2024 debut, Alek Manoah gave up seven runs — six earned — in four innings Sunday against the Nationals.

    Advice: Manoah issued a bases-loaded walk in the first, but that run was unearned because of an error to start the inning. He later gave up a homer in the third and five runs after recording the second out of the fourth. The good news is that Manoah had really strong velocity today — his 94.3 mph average on his fastball was up 1.5 mph from last year and also little better than his 2022 average — and he was able to strike out six batters.     Gray pitched seven innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters in Sunday's 3-2 extra-inning win over the Royals. He did not factor into the decision.

    Advice: Gray was tagged early Sunday, giving up a run in the first inning and then another in the bottom of the third frame on an RBI double by Vinnie Pasquantino. He finished his outing with four scoreless frames, securing his second straight quality start. Gray now owns a 2.50 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with 42 strikeouts over 39.2 innings in eight starts this season and he's tentatively set to return to the mound Saturday against the Rockies for a road matchup with his former team.   • Luis Severino walks career-high six versus Rays
    Luis Severino was charged with four runs in five innings Sunday in a no-decision against the Rays.

    Advice: Severino’s velocity was down a little today and he walked a career-high six batters, which is a little scary. He had never even walked five in a start previously. He’s not one of the Mets pitchers that typically has issues with the stolen base — he had allowed just one in his first six starts this season — but the Rays swiped three bases while he was in the game and seven in eight tries overall today. It’s the most runs he’s allowed since he was roughed up in his Mets debut on March 30. He’ll get the Braves next, so sitting him in mixed leagues seems like a good idea. Rotoworld Today, 3:31 pm
