• Set for bulk-relief duty
Wilson is in line to serve as a bulk reliever Saturday versus the Reds behind opening pitcher Jared Koenig, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Advice: Wilson has now alternated between traditional starts and bulk relief over his last six appearances. The right-hander had turned in a 3.00 ERA over a stretch of 11 appearances spanning 48 innings from April 10 through June 3, but he had his worst outing of the season in a loss to the Tigers this past Sunday, when he surrendered seven earned runs over 4.1 frames. • Will open Saturday's game
Koening will serve as the Brewers' opening pitcher in Saturday's game against the Reds, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Advice: It's a familiar role for Koening, who is unscored upon over 4.1 innings in his first four opener assignments this season. He's expected to be followed Saturday by Bryse Wilson in bulk relief. Rotowire.com Today, 8:46 am

  • Saddled with second loss
Alexander (0-2) took the extra-inning loss against the Twins on Friday, allowing an unearned run on a hit and an intentional walk without recording an out.

Advice: Alexander's lighting-quick outing resulted in the culmination of the Twins' comeback from a pair of deficits, with the southpaw intentionally putting Carlos Correa on and then conceding a walk-off RBI single on his first pitch to Max Kepler that plated automatic runner Austin Martin. Alexander has now allowed a run in three straight appearances and taken his first two losses of the season in consecutive outings, so it remains to be seen if he'll be kept out of high-leverage situations for the time being as he tries to get back on track. • Could rejoin rotation next week
The Yankees are expected to decide this weekend whether Cole (elbow) will need another rehab start or if he's ready to rejoin the Yankees' rotation, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

Advice: Cole was dominant in his third rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, pitching 4.1 innings during which he allowed an unearned run on two hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner tossed 70 pitches in the outing, so he'd likely have his workload managed to some extent if his next trip to the mound is with the big club. If it's determined that Cole needs another rehab start, it would be for ramp-up reasons rather than due to effectiveness -- he's dominated minor-leaguers in his three appearances, posting a 19:0 K:BB while allowing just one earned run over 12.1 frames. Should Cole next move back into the Yankees' rotation, his season debut could come during the team's three-game set versus Baltimore next week. Rotowire.com Today, 8:23 am

  • Dominant in securing 10th hold
Ferguson recorded a hold against the Red Sox on Friday by striking out all four batters he faced.

Advice: Ferguson entered with two runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and finished the frame by fanning Jarren Duran. The lefty reliever returned for the seventh and proceeded to strike out the side on 15 pitches. It was the sixth straight scoreless outing for Ferguson, and he's picked up three holds and a victory while registering an 8:2 K:BB over five innings during that span. He leads the Yankees with 10 holds on the campaign. Rotowire.com Today, 8:09 am

  • Fans seven in fourth win
Manaea (4-3) picked up the win Friday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over five-plus innings in a 2-1 victory over the Padres. He struck out seven.

Advice: The veteran southpaw did serve up a homer for the fifth straight start, a solo shot in the fifth inning by Jackson Merrill, but it was the only damage Manaea surrendered. It was a strong bounce-back effort after he'd been tagged for 11 earned runs in 9.1 frames over his prior two outings, and Manaea will take a 4.11 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 67:26 K:BB through 65.2 innings into his next start, which lines up to come on the road next week against the Rangers. • Transferred to 60-day IL
Strider (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday.

Advice: Strider is already set to miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign after undergoing elbow surgery in April, so the move to the 60-day IL doesn't impact his outlook. The right-hander will still have his sights set on a return at some point early in the 2025 season, but in the meantime, Saturday's transaction opened a spot on the 40-man roster for Ramon Laureano, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett. • Max Scherzer to make rehab start Saturday at Triple-A
Max Scherzer (thumb) will make a minor league rehab start on Saturday for Triple-A Round Rock.

Advice: Scherzer appears to be close to making it back for the defending World Series champions after suffering a thumb-related setback during his rehabilitation process from offseason back surgery. The 39-year-old veteran righty continue building up his pitch count and stamina in this outing and should be ready to make his season debut by the end of the month. Rotoworld Today, 7:39 am

  • Stuck with tough loss Friday
Waldron (4-6) took the loss Friday as the Padres were downed 2-1 by the Mets, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out two.

Advice: The knuckleballer delivered his fourth straight quality start while lasting seven innings for just the second time this season, but San Diego's offense gave little support. Waldron has gone seven straight outings in which he's pitched at least five innings and allowed two runs or less, posting a stellar 1.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 41:10 K:BB through 42.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Philadelphia. Rotowire.com Today, 7:37 am
