• Alek Thomas (hamstring) making progress again
Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Friday that Alek Thomas (hamstring) is making progress and will ramp up his baseball activities soon.

Advice: Thomas had been days away from a potential return from the injured list when he suffered a setback and experienced renewed discomfort in his left hamstring. There’s no clear timetable for his return at the moment, but it seems likely that he’ll require a minor league rehab assignment before he does come back. Rotoworld 10 minutes ago

  • Day off Friday
Urshela isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Friday's game against Arizona, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Advice: Urshela has gone 0-for-6 since returning from the injured list Tuesday, and he'll now get a chance to clear his head Friday. Matt Vierling will fill the open spot at third base and bat fifth. Rotowire.com 41 minutes ago

  • Officially promoted
The Dodgers recalled Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday.

Advice: Vargas has served as Oklahoma City's left fielder all season, slashing .302/.442/.590 with eight homers and 39 RBI across 181 plate appearances. The 24-year-old hasn't found the same success in the majors with a .640 OPS, but he could still draw starts in the outfield on days the Dodgers are matched up against a left-handed starter. James Outman was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Rotowire.com 49 minutes ago

  • Brandon Lowe (oblique) could return on Monday
Brandon Lowe (oblique) could be activated from the injured list and return to the Rays’ lineup on Monday.

Advice: The 29-year-old slugger will restart his minor league rehab assignment on Saturday and is set to play games on back-to-back days at Triple-A Durham. If all goes well with that, he’ll be cleared to rejoin the Rays for Monday’s series opener against the Red Sox. Lowe has been close to returning before, only to suffer a setback and require some extra time, so we’ll believe it when we see it. Rotoworld 53 minutes ago

  • Sent to Triple-A
The Dodgers optioned Outman to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday.

Advice: After a successful 2023 campaign, Outman has struggled mightily to begin 2024, slashing just .147/.250/.266 across 124 plate appearances. He'll now look to get back on track in the minors, though a significant turnaround would likely be required before the Dodgers consider calling him back up. Outman's demotion likely spells consistent playing time in center field for Andy Pages and clears a roster spot for Jason Heyward (back) to return from the injured list. Rotowire.com 54 minutes ago

  • Dodgers recall Miguel Vargas from Triple-A OKC
Dodgers recalled INF/OF Miguel Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Advice: While the versatile 24-year-old saw most of his action in left field at the Triple-A level, the Dodgers have a sudden need at third base with Max Muncy (oblique) landing on the injured list on Friday. Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday however that Vargas will play left field while he’s with the big league club. Enrique Hernandez is starting at third base on Friday night and could wind up seeing additional action there. Rotoworld 59 minutes ago

  • Dodgers option James Outman to Triple-A OKC
Dodgers optioned OF James Outman to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Advice: With Jason Heyward returning on Friday night, something had to give in the Dodgers’ outfield and Andy Pages was simply hitting too well to be sent down. That left Outman — who was slashing just .147/.250/.266 with three homers, 10 RBI and a pair of swipes — as the odd-man out this time around. He’ll look to get his season back on track at the Triple-A level. Rotoworld Today, 4:00 pm

  • Optioned to Sacramento
The Giants optioned Schmitt to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Schmitt will lose his spot on the big-league roster with Jorge Soler (shoulder) returning from the injured list Friday. Schmitt went just 3-for-22 and drove in one RBI during his brief stint in the majors, though he may return to San Francisco if the Giants need to rely on their organizational infield depth again later this season. • Undergoing season-ending surgery
Lee is set to undergo season-ending surgery in the next few weeks for a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Lee sustained the injury in the top of the first inning of Sunday's game against the Reds when he crashed into the outfield wall while attempting to make a catch. He was placed on the 10-day IL with what was initially labelled as a dislocated left shoulder, but an MRI on Tuesday revealed further structural damage. Lee received multiple opinions on the injury, and season-ending surgery has been ultimately been decided on for the 25-year-old outfielder. Lee signed a six-year, $113 million with the Giants in December of 2023 after seven seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization, and he will end his first season in the majors slashing .262/.310/.331 with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI over 158 plate appearances. Luis Matos has started in center field in each game since Lee's injury, and the former will reprise that role again Friday against the Rockies. Rotowire.com Today, 3:46 pm
