• Pitched through back injury Tuesday
Matz pitched through a lower-back injury during Tuesday's loss to the Tigers, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Advice: Matz first dealt with soreness while jogging a few days before his start, but he responded well to treatments and didn't have an issue during his between-starts bullpen session, clearing the way for him to make his scheduled start. However, Matz's velocity was well down in the outing and he wound up allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.1 innings, admitting after the start that he "wasn't able to finish like I normally do." The Cardinals weren't ready to say after the outing whether Matz might need a trip to the injured list, but it sounds like it could be a possibility. The lefty's next outing is tentatively lined up to come either Sunday versus the White Sox or Monday against the Mets. Rotowire.com 6 minutes ago

  • Converts 10th save
Suarez pitched a perfect ninth inning to lock down his 10th save of the year in a 6-4 win over the Reds on Tuesday. He struck out one.

Advice: Suarez continues to let Padres fans live in peace about letting Josh Hader walk this past offseason. He's now a perfect 10-for-10 in save opportunities and is tied with Ryan Helsley atop the league. Suarez now owns an 0.71 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB in 12.2 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 5:01 am
  • Blanks reds over five innings
Darvish (1-1) grabbed a win over the Reds on Tuesday, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just three hits in the outing. He struck three and did not walk a batter.

Advice: Darvish was finally able to pick up his first win of the season and help the Padres end a five-game losing streak. Tuesday was his first shutout effort since July 29 of last year. He was efficient, needing 70 pitches to get through five while inducing a bunch of weak contact. His strikeout numbers remain low in comparison to his career numbers, as he's now struck out three or fewer batters in three of his six starts so far. Still, Tuesday's outing was exactly what the Padres needed out of him, and he'll take a 3.45 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB into his next outing, which projects to be against the Cubs at the beginning of next week. • Bops first homer
Taveras went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Tuesday's 7-1 win over the Nationals.

Advice: Taveras bopped his first home run of the season, a two-run shot as part of the Rangers' three-run eighth inning that put the game out of reach. He's been a streaky hitter since emerging as the everyday center fielder, but Taveras hasn't done much streaking yet in 2024. He's batting .226 with a .613 OPS, and Tuesday's RBI were his first in 10 games and just his third and fourth of the season. Rotowire.com Today, 4:55 am
  • Timely hit in Tuesday's win
Machado went 1-for-5 with a three-run double in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Reds.

Advice: Machado stepped up to the plate in the fifth with the bases juiced and cleared them all with a double to center field. That was his first extra-base hit since April 14 and his first multi-RBI game since April 12. He's tallied a hit in four of his five games since being reinstated from the paternity list and is now slashing .250/.304/.388 with four homers, 16 RBI, 16 runs and a 9:29 BB:K in 125 plate appearances. • Swipes bag in Tuesday's win
Tatis went 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, a steal, an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Reds.

Advice: Tatis also reached base once more via a hit by pitch and stole his first bag since April 16. Coming into Tuesday, his numbers at the dish have been misleading. He was just 5-for-40 over his last 10 games but posted a 72.4 percent hard hit rate and averaged an exit velocity of 96.9 miles per hour. He's experiencing some bad luck at the moment, which should turn around sooner than later. For the season, Tatis is slashing .238/.326/.437 with six homers, 17 RBI, 22 runs, four steals and a 15:27 BB:K in 144 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 4:44 am
  • Steal, two RBI in loss
India went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and two RBI in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Padres.

Advice: India delivered a two-run single in the sixth inning then put himself in scoring position with his third steal of the season. He took a turn at cleanup -- his first time this season -- as the Reds continue to work around the absence of primary cleanup hitter Christian Encarnacion-Strand (hand). India is 9-for-23 (.391) over six games since returning from an illness that cost him four days. Rotowire.com Today, 4:29 am
  • Mediocre results versus former team
Martinez (0-2) took the loss Tuesday against the Padres, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings.

Advice: The Padres first got to Martinez in the third with a run and then would plate four more in the fifth with a bases loaded double by Manny Machado being the big hit in the inning. It hasn't been smooth sailing for Martinez to begin his tenure with the Reds, as he's given up at least three runs and six hits in all four of his starts thus far while managing to get to six innings once. The 33-year-old owns a 5.46 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 20:3 K:BB in 28 innings. If Frankie Montas (forearm) is able to return when first eligible next week then it's likely Martinez returns to a long relief role in the bullpen for the foreseeable future. • Homers in loss
Candelario went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to San Diego.

Advice: Candelario and Stuart Fairchild each homered in the seventh inning, closing a four-run deficit to two. It was the second consecutive game with multiple hits for Candelario, who endured an 0-for-19 slump heading into the series against the Padres. He's hitting .189/.282/.378 with three homers and nine RBI through 103 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 4:14 am
