• Gets break Friday
Rafaela is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Cardinals.

Advice: Rafaela will get a break as Boston kicks off their series against the Cardinals. The second-year major leaguer opened the campaign as the Red Sox's primary center fielder but has mostly played shortstop over the past month. The lineup absence marks his first time on the bench since April 11. Rotowire.com Today, 1:35 pm

  • Optioned to AAA
Shewmake was optioned to Triple-AAA Charlotte on Friday.

Advice: Shewmake will move back to Charlotte with Danny Mendick (back) being reinstated from the 10-day IL on Friday. The 26-year-old struggled during 29 games in the bigs, slashing .125/.134/.203 with one walk across 67 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 12:50 pm

  • Losing playing time
Mullins is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Advice: Mullins will be on the bench for the third time in the last five games despite the O's facing a right-handed pitcher Friday. The left-handed Mullins is amid a massive slump, batting .085 with a 30.2 percent strikeout rate in 63 plate appearances since April 22. Colton Cowser has been earning more work in center field and will start there Friday while Kyle Stowers and Ryan O'Hearn fill out the outfield. Rotowire.com Today, 12:11 pm

  • Drawing start Friday
Spence will start Friday in Kansas City, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Advice: It will be the first major-league start for Spence, who has posted a 4.26 ERA and 22:7 K:BB over 25.1 innings covering 11 relief appearances. The Rule 5 pick will be pitching on three days' rest after allowing two runs over two-thirds of an inning on Monday in Houston. Spence has gone three-plus frames in six of his appearances, which includes a season-long 4.2-inning outing on May 5 versus the Marlins. However, this could wind up being a piggyback situation, with Kyle Muller also available to go multiple innings. Rotowire.com Today, 11:18 am

  • Out of lineup Thursday
Triolo isn't in the Pirates' lineup Thursday versus the Cubs.

Advice: Triolo will begin the day on the bench amid his recent struggles. After going 0-for-3 on Wednesday, he has just two hits in his last 39 plate appearances. The third baseman has been starting in the absence of Ke'Bryan Hayes, but Nick Gonzales will slide over from second to third Thursday. Alika Williams joins the lineup at second and will bat ninth. • Resting Wednesday
Amaya is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Advice: Amaya will get a breather after he started at catcher in each of the past three games while going 1-for-9 at the dish. Yan Gomes will fill in for Amaya in Wednesday's series finale. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 1:45 pm

  • Cedric Mullins gets pulled for pinch-hitter
Cedric Mullins, who was dropped to ninth in Baltimore’s lineup, was lifted for a pinch-hitter after opening up 0-for-2 on Wednesday.

Advice: Mullins is 0-for-16 with eight strikeouts in his last five games and 5-for-59 with a 19/4 K/BB in his last 18 games. He was off to fine start before that, but the Orioles seem to have real concerns about the way he’s performing, given that he was just held out of the starting lineup twice against righties over the weekend. He’s down to .183/.234/.349 for the season. Rotoworld Wednesday, 1:14 pm

  • Should resume rehab assignment soon
Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that Lowe (oblique) will rejoin the team in Tampa Bay and will resume swinging the bat before heading back out on a minor-league rehab assignment in short order, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Advice: Cash's comments came after Lowe was pulled off his assignment with Durham when he experienced renewed soreness in his right oblique during his fourth rehab game Sunday. Lowe visited a spine surgeon Tuesday for further consultation on his injury, with Cash noting that further imaging showed the second baseman was "heading in the right direction" with his recovery. Cash said that Lowe may still have to manage some pain moving forward, but the 29-year-old at least appears to have steered clear of a major setback. If he's able to return to Durham and resume playing in games by this weekend, Lowe could be ready to come off the 10-day injured list at some point next week. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 11:59 am

  • Getting rest day
Grandal is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers.

Advice: Grandal will take a seat for the day game after he started behind the plate in both of the previous two nights, going 1-for-7 with a home run. Joey Bart will replace Grandal on Wednesday as the Pirates' starting catcher. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 10:03 am
