    • Lane Thomas plates two runs in loss to Padres
      Lane Thomas smacked a two-run double, drew a pair of walks and scored a run on Wednesday as the Nationals fell to the Padres in San Diego.

      Advice: Thomas finally broke through and got the Nationals on the board with a two-run double off of Tom Cosgrove in the ninth inning. He scored later in the frame on a two-run double by Luis Garcia, but the five-run rally in the ninth still fell short. The 28-year-old outfielder was also cut down attempting to steal second base in the ballgame.       Nathan Eovaldi surrendered five runs in seven innings Wednesday in a no-decision versus the Brewers.

      Advice: Jake Bauers’ third-inning grand slam accounted for most of the damage. It was actually the first slam ever surrendered by Eovaldi; the league had hit just .227/.228/.267 in 79 career plate appearances with the bases loaded.       Marcus Semien finished 0-for-5 on Wednesday and is in a 4-for-41 slump in his last 10 games.

      Advice: Semien started off well enough in April, but he’s been treading water for about two months now, and particularly unfortunate for fantasy leaguers is that he’s attempted just four steals this season, converting three of them.       Bryan Reynolds extended his hitting streak to 23 consecutive games on Wednesday in the Pirates’ victory over the Reds.

      Advice: Reynolds officially owns the longest hit streak of the 2024 campaign after a first-inning single on Wednesday afternoon against Reds starter Graham Ashcraft. It was his lone hit in five at-bats, but the fact that he got it out of the way right out of the gate took all of the drama out of this one.       Casas (ribs) took approximately 20 swings in the batting cage Wednesday at about 75-percent effort, Molly Burkhardt of MLB.com reports.

      Advice: Casas resumed hitting for the first time since he was diagnosed with a cartilage tear in his left ribcage in late April. He said he felt great during the workout, but he noted that the real test will be to see how sore he is Thursday. If Casas isn't experiencing too much discomfort Thursday, he could be cleared to start hitting off a tee.       Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Wednesday that Williams (back) could return from the 60-day injured list sooner than his initial mid-to-late-July recovery timeline, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

      Advice: Williams was scheduled for a bullpen session Wednesday, which would have marked his first time throwing off a mound since being shut down during spring training with multiple stress fractures in his back. He will need to throw off the bump multiple times and eventually go out on a rehab assignment before being activated.
