    • Nico Hoerner out of lineup due to hand injury
Cubs manager Craig Counsell now says X-rays last night on Nico Hoerner’s hand came back “somewhat inconclusive,” and the second baseman is not playing in Friday’s game.

Advice: It was originally reported that the X-rays came back negative after Hoerner was hit on the right hand by a pitch. Hoerner, though, had some trouble gripping the bat and swinging today. Hopefully, this is still just a day-to-day thing. There is the potential for some bad news, though. David Bote is starting at second base tonight. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:26 pm

    • Sitting out after HBP
Hoerner is not in Friday's lineup in Cincinnati after being hit on the hand by a pitch in Thursday's win over the White Sox, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Hoerner was struck by a pitch in the fourth inning Thursday but stayed in and finished that game. He underwent a precautionary X-ray afterward, which evidently came back clean. However, it could be dealing with some residual soreness, hence his absence from Friday's lineup. Consider him day-to-day. David Bote will handle second base Friday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:22 pm

    • Winn has two-hit game Thursday
Masyn Winn went 2-for-5 against the Rockies on Thursday.

Advice: It was a quiet night for the Cardinals offense, but Winn returned from a back injury and added another two hits out of the leadoff spot. His average is up to .311 with an .804 OPS on the season. In his last 25 games, Winn is 32-for-89 (.359) with three home runs and three stolen bases. Rotoworld Thursday, 7:53 pm

    • X-rays negative on Nico Hoerner’s hand after HBP
X-rays came back negative on Nico Hoerner’s hand after being hit by a pitch during Thursday’s game against the Reds.

Advice: Hoerner remained in the contest and appears to have avoided serious injury after being plunked on the hand by a 96.5 mph fastball from Reds starter Hunter Greene during the early stages of the game. It doesn’t sound like he’s going to wind up missing any time. Rotoworld Thursday, 7:44 pm

    • Masyn Winn returns to lineup Thursday vs. Rockies
Masyn Winn (back) is in the lineup for Thursday’s series opener against the Rockies.

Advice: Winn took a seat for Wednesday’s game against the Astros to address a lingering back issue, so it’s a positive development that he’s ready to roll for Thursday’s series opener against the Rockies at Busch Stadium. The 22-year-old shortstop has been excellent this season, taking a major step forward at the dish, batting .309 with three homers and eight steals across 197 plate appearances over 54 games. • Returns to lineup Thursday
Winn (back) will play shortstop and bat leadoff in Thursday's game versus the Rockies.

Advice: Winn was absent from the Cardinals' lineup Wednesday in Houston as he battles a nagging back issue. It's something he's been managing off and on all season but hasn't seemed to affect him lately, as the rookie shortstop is slashing .370/.400/.575 over his last 20 contests. • Managing back issue
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Winn is absent from Wednesday's lineup in Houston due to a lingering back issue, Bally Sports Midwest reports.

Advice: Winn has required some extra days off this season because of a back problem that dates back to spring training. He had to be checked on by the trainer during Monday's game versus the Astros when the injury flared up during an at-bat, but Winn remained in that contest and also played Tuesday, going 3-for-3 with a home run, a walk and a stolen base. While the injury does not seem to be affecting Winn's performance, the club wants to be proactive with rest. Brandon Crawford is occupying shortstop Wednesday. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 11:01 am

    • Masyn Winn sits for second time in a week
Masyn Winn is being rested for the second time in a week Wednesday against the Astros.

Advice: Unless there’s something going on here that the Cardinals aren’t disclosing, it’s weird that the team has decided the 22-year-old shortstop needs three days off out of the last seven (the team didn’t play last Thursday). Winn went 3-for-3 with a homer last night, pushing him up to .309/.359/.446, and his backup, Brandon Crawford, doesn’t seem to have much to offer at this point. Rotoworld Wednesday, 9:44 am

    • Taking seat Wednesday
Winn is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game in Houston.

Advice: Winn had a big night in Tuesday's loss to the Astros, reaching base four times while hitting a home run and stealing a base. He will receive some rest during Wednesday's matinee, with Brandon Crawford getting a start at shortstop. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 8:38 am
