• Keider Montero likely to start in place of Mize
Keider Montero is likely to take the place of Casey Mize (hamstring) in the rotation.

Advice: Jason Beck of MLB.com reports that Montero is traveling with the team to Minnesota, so that just about confirms it. Mize is currently dealing with hamstring troubles, and is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list. Montero hasn’t had success as an MLB hurler yet, but the 23-year-old has quality stuff and could be an interesting streamer when facing less-than-spectacular lineups. • Likely candidate to sub for Mize
Montero is a likely candidate to start in place of the injured Casey Mize (hamstring) after the latter was scratched from a scheduled start Monday with Triple-A Toledo, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Mize is expected to land on the 15-day injured list with a strained hamstring, and it looks like Montero will be the choice to take his spot. Mize's next turn had been scheduled for Saturday in Cincinnati, although the Tigers could choose to alter the order of their rotation. Montero has made one start and one bulk-relief appearance for Detroit this season, allowing nine runs with an 11:4 K:BB over 8.2 innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:04 am

  • Casey Mize (hamstring) could head to injured list
Tigers manager AJ Hinch stated in an interview with MLB Network Radio that Casey Mize (hamstring) may need a trip to the injured list.

Advice: The hope was that Mize’s issue was just a cramp in his hamstring, but it turns out it’s at least a little more severe than that. The right-hander has the All-Star break coming up relatively soon, and it’s possible the Tigers could keep the 27-year-old out of action until after that break. Even if he does avoid a trip to the injured list, don’t be surprised if Mize isn’t able to make his next scheduled start over the weekend. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:28 am

  • Likely headed to injured list
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said in an interview Tuesday that Mize (hamstring) is a likely candidate to be placed on the 15-day injured list, Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio reports.

Advice: Mize had to depart Sunday's start against the Angels with a left hamstring issue. While the initial hope was that he was merely dealing with a cramp, Hinch said Tuesday that it's more serious than that. Mize would be held out at least through the All-Star break if he is indeed placed on the IL. Matt Manning and Keider Montero are candidates to take Mize's spot in the Tigers' rotation. • Poised for season debut next week
Marquez (elbow) will make one more rehab start before rejoining the Rockies' rotation next week, Patrick Lyons of JustBaseball.com reports.

Advice: Marquez holds a 9.58 ERA and 14:4 K:BB over 10.1 innings in his first five rehab starts and in his last outing with Triple-A Albuquerque retired just two batters before getting pulled. His highest pitch count during his rehab assignment has been 52 (on June 16) and he threw just 33 pitches in his last start. Marquez is working his way back from Tommy John surgery. • Justin Verlander has started playing catch
Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Verlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,” but the team has said that he’ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely. • Strikes out two in scoreless inning
Kopech struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Sunday against the Rockies. The game was tied at the time, and the White Sox would go on to lose in 14 innings.

Advice: Kopech made his third appearance in four days after recording back-to-back saves June 27 and June 28. The right-hander delivered Sunday, retiring the side in order while striking out two batters on just eight pitches. The 28-year-old now owns a 2.25 ERA with two saves over his past eight innings, solidifying himself as the White Sox's closer. Rotowire.com Sunday, 5:37 pm
  • Casey Mize optimistic Sunday injury just a cramp
Casey Mize said he believes his left leg injury Sunday was probably just a cramp.

Advice: Mize will undergo tests after grabbing at his left hamstring in the sixth inning today, but the Tigers don’t seem overly worried at this point. If Mize is forced to the injured list, the Tigers could go to Matt Manning at the back of the rotation. Rotoworld Sunday, 5:37 pm

  • Set to undergo additional imaging
Mize (leg) will undergo further tests on his left leg, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Advice: After exiting Sunday's win over the Angels in the bottom of the sixth inning with a left leg injury, Mize will see what the extent of the damage is. In regard to if it was a cramp or not, the right hander said "that's what it felt like" and that he and the team will "see how the next couple of days play out." The severity of his injury will be determined once Mize receives the results of the imaging. Rotowire.com Sunday, 4:29 pm
