      Flaherty (5-5) took the loss against the Angels on Thursday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven.

      Advice: Flaherty got tagged for a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second before proceeding to strike out six of the next nine batters he faced. However, the right-hander would go on to surrender two more long balls on the night as the Tigers failed to back him with anything on offense. Flaherty had allowed one run or fewer in four consecutive starts coming in, and no runs in three of his previous four. The three home runs he gave up Thursday also marked a season high.       Advice: Scott was summoned to protect a three-run lead against the division-rival Phillies and set down the side in order on just nine pitches (six strikes). The 29-year-old lefty has converted 11 of 13 save opportunities to accompany a 1.54 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 36/23 K/BB ratio across 35 innings (34 appearances).       Byron Buxton hit a three-run homer while going 3-for-4 in a 13-6 rout of the Diamondbacks on Thursday.

      Advice: Buxton also scored three runs. The three-run blast came off Scott McGough and gave Minnesota a 11-0 lead and it travelled 456 feet. The outfielder is starting to pick things up offensively, and he’s picked up three hits in two of his last three games while improving his slash to .261/.311/.449.       Jeimer Candelario (knee) remains out of the lineup for Thursday’s contest against the Cardinals.

      Advice: Candelario will get another day off to rest and recover as he continues to manage right knee tendinitis. The expectation is that he’ll be able to manage the ongoing issue moving forward, but if he’s unable to return in a couple days, the Reds might not have a choice besides sending him to the injured list.     • George Kirby changed his curve grip in last start
      George Kirby debuted a new curveball grip in Tuesday’s start, making the change “on the fly” before the game.

      Advice: Kirby didn’t like how his curveball was performing against right-handed batters this season, so he decided to try a new grip before Tuesday’s start in order to “find something that has a little more depth and [he] can stay on the plate with it.” It seemed to work on Tuesday as Kirby threw just six curveballs but got five swings and two whiffs. The other swings resulted in foul balls and one groundout. Kirby mentioned that it’s a grip he’s used in the past and one he knows Zac Gallen uses. “I throw it a little bit harder, but it just kind of eliminates the horizontal movement, which, especially to righties, I kind of had a hard time with.” After a successful first attempt at the new grip, the modification may stay around, giving Kirby a little more fantasy upside in what is already a good season.
