    • Carson Spiers solid in win over Cardinals
Carson Spiers allowed two runs -- one earned -- with four strikeouts over six innings in a win over the Cardinals on Saturday.

Advice: Spiers put together a solid start against the Cardinals on Saturday to earn his second win of the season. A double and a single to start the third inning would bring an unearned run in to score after a dropped foul pop error. Paul Goldschmidt took Spiers deep for a solo shot in the sixth for the second run before Spiers closed out the sixth inning for a quality start. He struck out four. The 26-year-old right-hander has been excellent for Cincinnati, posting a 3.13 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and a 29/7 K/BB ratio across 37 1/3 innings. He’ll take on the Tigers at home on Friday. • Sonny Gray chased early in loss to Reds
Sonny Gray allowed six runs -- three earned -- with six strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in a loss to the Reds on Saturday.

Advice: Gray had worked through two scoreless innings to start the game before the Reds strung together three straight doubled to start the third inning, driving in two runs. A triple, a walk, and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. A fielding error would bring a run in and keep the bases loaded as Gray was relieved at 92 pitches. All inherited runners would come in to score. The 34-year-old right-hander will look to put this one behind him when he takes a 2.98 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and a 109/23 K/BB ratio across 87 2/3 innings into a road start against the Nationals on Friday. • Paul Dejong powers White Sox to win over Rockies
Paul Dejong went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, two runs scored, and three RBI to power the White Sox to an 11-3 win over the Rockies on Saturday.

Advice: With the game tied in the sixth inning, Dejong took Cal Quantrill deep for a two-run blast to give the White Sox the lead. He then knocked a base hit in the eighth to bring home a run and extend the lead and scored on a home run by Korey Lee. The 30-year-old shortstop is hitting .241/.286/.460 with 15 homers and 34 RBI across 280 plate appearances. Rotoworld Today, 1:56 pm

    • Brendan Rodgers homers, reaches three times in loss
Brendan Rodgers went 2-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, and a walk against the White Sox on Saturday.

Advice: Rodgers put the Rockies on the board with a solo homer off Jonathan Cannon in the second inning. He then drew a walk to lead off the fifth and scored on a home run by Nolan Jones. Rodgers would reach again with a base hit to lead off the seventh. The 27-year-old second baseman is slashing a solid .280/.316/.410 with five homers and 27 RBI across 253 plate appearances. • Nears return to baseball activities
Trout (knee) is getting close to returning to baseball activities, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Trout experienced some soreness in his left knee in mid-June but said this week that he's feeling better. Angels manager Ron Washington consequently indicated that the future Hall of Famer is nearing a return to baseball activities, though he didn't specify the nature of those activities or a clear timeframe. Trout has been working out on a stationary bike and elliptical, though he remains several weeks away from being ready to be activated from the injured list. Rotowire.com Today, 12:41 pm

    • Smacks homer in loss
Ramirez went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 10-3 loss to the Royals.

Advice: Ramirez is up to six homers and 16 RBI over 21 contests in June while hitting .294 (25-for-85) for the month. The third baseman opened the scoring Friday, but the Royals poured on seven runs before the Guardians had a response. Overall, Ramirez continues to provide elite all-around production with 22 homers, 73 RBI, 62 runs scored, 15 stolen bases and a .278/.332/.547 slash line through 77 contests. • Slugs 11th homer
Merrill went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Friday's 9-2 win over the Red Sox.

Advice: The rookie capped San Diego's improbable nine-run fifth inning by sending a Greg Weissert fastball over the fence in straightaway center field. Merrill's power has emerged as the weather has heated up -- while his 11 homers through 82 games is already good for a 21-year-old in his first MLB campaign, eight of those long balls have come in his last 15 contests, a stretch in which he's batting .309 (17-for-55) with 11 runs and 16 RBI. • Jackson Merrill homers in nine-run fifth inning
Jackson Merrill hit a three-run homer to camp a nine-run fifth as the Padres bested the Red Sox 9-2 on Friday.

Advice: The Padres were held scoreless until the fifth, when the first nine batters totaled nine runs on eight hits and one walk against Nick Pivetta and Greg Weissert. Merrill concluded the rally with the second homer of the inning. After that, the Padres put their bats back to bed, coming up with just one hit off Chase Anderson in the final four innings. Merrill’s homer was his 11th in 82 games. His current .282/.318/.439 line is a near match for the .277/.326/.444 he came in at least year, only that was compiled in high-A and Double-A. • Garrett Mitchell’s rehab assignment nearly over
Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy noted on Friday that the final day for Garrett Mitchell’s (finger) minor league rehab assignment is on Saturday.

Advice: Murphy also told reporters that there haven’t been any discussions about activating the 25-year-old outfielder and optioning him to Triple-A Nashville. That means that the Brewers will have some decisions to make about their roster before the weekend is through. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:27 pm
