• Zack Wheeler fans six in victory over Nationals
Zack Wheeler picked up his fifth victory of the season on Friday night, holding the Nationals to just two runs on three hits over 7 1/3 strong innings of work.

Advice: The 33-year-old right-hander racked up six strikeouts on the night while issuing three free passes. The Nationals’ scoring in the contest came on a pair of RBI doubles — one by Keibert Ruiz in the second inning and another off the bat of Eddie Rosario in the fifth. Aside from that though, Wheeler was in complete control. He got 17 swings and misses on 104 pitches on the night — 10 on his fastball alone — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. Now 5-3 on the season, Wheeler will carry a 2.52 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and a 71/19 K/BB ratio (60 2/3 innings) into Thursday’s showdown against the Rangers. Rotoworld 11 minutes ago

  • Jake Irvin gives up four runs in loss to Phillies
Jake Irvin wasn’t at his best in a losing effort against the Phillies on Friday night, giving up four runs on five hits over his five innings of work.

Advice: The 27-year-old hurler walked one and struck out two batters on the night. The Phillies got him for a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Alec Bohm, then scratched out a pair of runs in the second inning and added another in the third on an RBI double by Brandon Marsh. Irvin got 10 swings and misses on 93 pitches on the evening — seven of those on his curveball — while registering a CSW of 27 percent. He’ll look to get back in the win column as he brings a 3.91 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and a 38/9 K/BB ratio (50 2/3 innings) into Wednesday’s matchup against the Twins. Rotoworld 12 minutes ago

  • Extends throwing distance
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Rodriguez (shoulder) has extended his throwing program out to 60 feet, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Advice: Rodriguez had to pause his throwing program in early April due to discomfort in his left shoulder, but the fact that he's extended his throwing distance is an encouraging sign. He was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on April 17, which would make the left-hander eligible to return in mid-June. Rotowire.com Today, 4:55 pm

  • Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) throwing at 60 feet
Diamondbacks’ skipper Torey Lovullo told reporters on Friday that Eduardo Rodriguez is now throwing at a distance of 60 feet.

Advice: He has yet to throw off of a mound, but the fact that he has been playing catch and gradually increasing his distance is at least an encouraging sign. He’s going to require a long and slow build up — and several minor league rehab starts — before he’s ready to make his Diamondbacks’ debut. Don’t expect to see him on a big league mound before the end of June. Rotoworld Today, 4:53 pm

  • Scheduled for rehab assignment
Maeda (illness) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Advice: Maeda has been dealing with a viral illness that landed him on the IL on May 11. He began throwing off the mound Wednesday, and he'll make a rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Barring any setback, that would put Maeda in line to return for May 24 against the Blue Jays. The 36-year-old right-hander is 1-1 over seven starts this season with a 6.75 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB over 30.2 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 4:30 pm

  • Kenta Maeda (illness) to make rehab start Sunday
Kenta Maeda (illness) will make a minor league rehab start at Triple-A Toledo on Sunday.

Advice: It remains unclear whether or not he’ll require any additional rehab outings after that first one to get back into the swing of things. Maeda has been disastrous in his first season with the Tigers so far, posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and a 23/10 K/BB ratio across 30 2/3 innings through his first seven starts. • Recalled by Los Angeles
The Dodgers recalled Vanasco from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday.

Advice: Vanasco made his major-league debut April 15 against the Nationals, throwing two scoreless innings while striking out one batter. He was optioned to Triple-A the next day, and he has not yielded an earned run over his last four bullpen outings with Oklahoma City. To make room for Vanasco, the Dodgers optioned southpaw Nick Ramirez to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Rotowire.com Today, 4:12 pm

  • Dodgers recall Ricky Vanasco from Triple-A OKC
Dodgers recalled RHP Ricky Vanasco from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Advice: After a bullpen game from the Dodgers on Thursday night, the team wanted to add a fresh arm to their bullpen mix on Friday and Vanasco was the choice. The 25-year-old hurler has retired all six batters that he has faced with the Dodgers this season across two perfect innings. He’ll function in middle relief. Rotoworld Today, 4:01 pm

  • Lands on injured list
The Giants placed Winn on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right forearm strain, retroactive to Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Although manager Bob Melvin described Winn's injury as mild, the 26-year-old's MRI results seemingly told a different story. Winn will now be sidelined for at least the next two weeks while Mason Black comes up from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the open spot in San Francisco's rotation. Rotowire.com Today, 3:42 pm
