    • Flaherty pitches well through back injury
Jack Flaherty threw five scoreless innings in a win over the Astros on Saturday, allowing three hits and striking out six.

Advice: Flaherty received an anti-inflammatory injection on Monday and had a few extra days of rest to combat a back injury, but he looked good overall on Saturday. His four-seam velocity was down 1.5 mph, so that’s something to keep an eye on, but he induced eight whiffs on 31 swings for a 26 percent whiff rate and 32 percent CSW. He needed just 73 pitches to get through five innings and sets up for a great spot next week against the White Sox. Rotoworld Today, 5:11 pm
    • On bench Saturday
Smith is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Royals, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Advice: Smith will give way to Austin Barnes behind the dish for the second time in three days, with Barnes batting ninth Saturday. In 256 plate appearances, Smith owns a .848 OPS with 10 homers and a 16.0 percent strikeout rate. Rotowire.com Today, 2:07 pm

    • Devin Williams (back) nearing mound work
Brewers’ manager Pat Murphy told reporters on Saturday that Devin Williams (back) remains on track to return after the All-Star break.

Advice: Murphy also noted that the 29-year-old hurler is expected to get on a mound soon as he continues his recovery from a pair of stress fractures in his back. While Trevor Megill has been outstanding in his stead, Williams is one of the premiere closers in all of baseball and should jump right back into the Brewers’ ninth inning role as soon as he’s healthy enough to do so. • Jazz Chisholm Jr. gets rare day off on Saturday
Jazz Chisholm Jr. is not in the lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the division-rival Nationals.

Advice: It’s a rare day off for Chisholm, who has made an appeares in 68 of 69 contests this season for Miami. The talented 26-year-old outfielder is batting .254/.319/.435 with 10 homers and 13 steals in 285 plate appearances. It’ll be Dane Myers patrolling center field on Saturday afternoon in his absence. • Day off versus left-hander
Chisholm is not in the lineup for Saturday's contest against the Nationals.

Advice: It's a rare day off for the left-handed hitting Chisholm as the Nationals send southpaw DJ Herz to the bump. Dane Myers is getting the start in center field. Rotowire.com Today, 10:55 am

    • Expected to throw off mound soon
Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Saturday that Williams (back) is expected to be cleared to throw off a mound soon, Jack Stern of Brewer Fanatic reports.

Advice: Murphy also added that Williams remains on track to return just after the All-Star break, although that would seem to be a tentative timetable given that the reliever has yet to resume throwing off a mound. Williams is working his way back from multiple stress fractures in his back. Trevor Megill has operated as the Brewers' primary closer with Williams on the shelf. Rotowire.com Today, 10:52 am

    • Transferred to 60-day IL
Strider (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Saturday.

Advice: Strider is already set to miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign after undergoing elbow surgery in April, so the move to the 60-day IL doesn't affect his outlook. The right-hander will still have his sights set on a return at some point early in the 2025 season; in the meantime, Saturday's transaction opened a spot on the 40-man roster for Ramon Laureano, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Gwinnett. • Stuck with tough loss Friday
Waldron (4-6) took the loss Friday as the Padres were downed 2-1 by the Mets, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out two.

Advice: The knuckleballer delivered his fourth straight quality start while lasting seven innings for just the second time this season, but San Diego's offense gave little support. Waldron has gone seven straight outings in which he's pitched at least five innings and allowed two runs or fewer, posting a stellar 1.91 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 41:10 K:BB through 42.1 innings over that stretch. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Philadelphia. Rotowire.com Today, 7:37 am
    • Braves transfer Spencer Strider to 60-day IL
Braves transferred RHP Spencer Strider to the 60-day injured list.

Advice: The procedural move opens up a spot on Atlanta’s 40-man roster. Strider is targeting an early-season return to the Braves’ starting rotation next year after undergoing an internal brace procedure, not a full Tommy John ligament replacement operation, on his right elbow back in mid-April.
