  • Verdugo not in Tuesday's lineup
Alex Verdugo is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Orioles.

Advice: He'll take a seat against left-hander Bruce Zimmermann. Kyle Schwarber will start in left field and J.D. Martinez will serve as the designated hitter.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 6 minutes ago
  • Edmundo Sosa (wrist) remains sidelined Tuesday
Edmundo Sosa (wrist) remains out of the Cardinals' lineup Tuesday against the Brewers.

Advice: The Cardinals are looking for their 17th straight win -- and a postseason clincher -- but they'll have to do it without Sosa, who was hit in the right wrist by a pitch on Friday. He managed to avoid a fracture and is considered day-to-day at this point. Paul DeJong will continue to cover shortstop duties.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 9 minutes ago

  • Mariners designate Andriese for assignment
Mariners designated RHP Matt Andriese for assignment.

Advice: The move opens up a spot for call-up Matt Brash on the 40-man roster. Andriese actually pitched pretty well in his limited time with the Mariners, but he'll lose his spot with a roster crunch.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 15 minutes ago

  • Phillies release OF Matt Joyce
    Phillies released OF Matt Joyce.

Advice: Joyce officially hits the open market after being designated for assignment over the weekend. The veteran outfielder was limited to just 43 games this season due to a back injury and hit just .091 (5-for-44) when he was on the field.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 19 minutes ago

  • Phils option INF/OF Williams to Triple-A
Phillies optioned INF/OF Luke Williams to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Alec Bohm is back from Triple-A to take his spot on the roster. Williams has hit .245/.315/.316 with one homer over 108 plate appearances with the Phils this season.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 21 minutes ago

  • Phils option Rosso to Triple-A
Phillies optioned RHP Ramón Rosso to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Connor Brogdon will take his place in the Phils' bullpen. Rosso holds a 5.63 ERA over seven appearances in the majors this year.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 23 minutes ago
  • Phils recall RHP Brogdon from Triple-A
Phillies activated RHP Connor Brogdon from the 10-day injured list.

Advice: Brogdon has been out since the middle of the month with a right groin strain. He returns to a 3.60 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over 54 relief appearances.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 25 minutes ago

  • Phillies recall infielder Alec Bohm from Triple-A
Phillies recalled INF Alec Bohm from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Bohm was demoted to Triple-A a little over a month ago before coming down with a hand injury, but he returned to action on September 17 and has hit .235/.270/.412 with a homer and three doubles over eight games. He has hit safely in four straight games, though, and could provide a lift as the Phillies try to stay alive this week.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 29 minutes ago

  • Jacob deGrom (elbow) officially shut down by Mets
The Mets have shut down Jacob deGrom (elbow) for the season.

Advice: DeGrom threw a side session on Monday and everything went fine, but Mets manager Luis Rojas said that there's "no point" on having him pitch in a game before the end of the season. It was a longshot in the first place, but this makes it official. DeGrom was off to a historic start this season before injuries got in the way, including a partial tear of the UCL in his elbow. He'll finish the year with a ridiculous 1.05 ERA over 18 starts. Apparently his elbow is healed now, so here's hoping he's 100 percent to begin 2022.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 37 minutes ago

  • Report: Pirates to call up Contreras for MLB debut
Héctor Gómez of Z 101 reports that the Pirates are calling up prospect right-hander Roansy Contreras.

Advice: Contreras is expected to make his MLB debut Wednesday against the Cubs. The 21-year-old has been excellent when healthy this season, posting a 2.64 ERA and 82/13 K/BB ratio in 58 innings between Double- and Triple-A. Acquired as part of the Jameson Taillon trade with the Yankees, Contreras is one of the Pirates' top pitching prospects. This should be a fun sneak preview at the very least.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 49 minutes ago

  • Pablo Lopez (shoulder) throws simulated game
Pablo Lopez (shoulder) threw 45-50 pitches over three simulated innings on Tuesday.

Advice: Lopez was originally slated to throw live BP, but there was a change in plans due to the weather. The Marlins will see how his body responds to Tuesday's throwing session before deciding whether he'll get into a game this week. Lopez has been out since mid-July with a right rotator cuff strain.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 11:28 am

  • Blue Jays activate Cavan Biggio from injured list
Blue Jays activated INF/OF Cavan Biggio from the 10-day injured list.

Advice: Biggio went down with neck/back issues in early August before being diagnosed with a Grade 1 UCL sprain in his left elbow a few weeks later. He's hit .227/.300/.386 with two homers and a 15/5 K/BB ratio over 12 games in Triple-A since returning to action. He has struggled during his time in the majors this year and it's unclear how much he'll play, so those in standard mixed leagues don't need to pick him up.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 11:17 am

  • Jays option Borucki to Triple-A
Blue Jays optioned LHP Ryan Borucki to Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: Cavan Biggio will take his spot on the active roster. It's been an eventful few days for Borucki, who hit Kevin Kiermaier with a pitch last Wednesday after he took a scouting card from Alejandro Kirk. Borucki was suspended three games before it was negotiated down to two. He'll now finish the year in the minors.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 11:11 am

  • Connor Brogdon (groin) expected to return Tuesday
Connor Brogdon (groin) is set to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Advice: Brogdon is expected to rejoin the Phillies' bullpen on Tuesday. The 26-year-old righty has registered a solid 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 45/18 K/BB ratio across 55 innings (54 appearances, one start) this season. NBCSportsEDGE.com Saturday, 10:17 am

  • Alex Verdugo on the bench Saturday vs. Yankees
Alex Verdugo is not in the Red Sox' starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Yankees.

Advice: Verdugo will take a seat with lefty Nestor Cortes Jr. on the mound for the Yankees on Saturday afternoon. It'll be Kyle Schwarber and Hunter Renfroe in the corner outfield spots, sandwiched between Enrique Hernández, in a pivotal showdown at Fenway Park. NBCSportsEDGE.com Saturday, 9:08 am
  • Edmundo Sosa (wrist) sitting out Saturday vs. Cubs
Edmundo Sosa (wrist) is not in the Cardinals' starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: Sosa appears to have avoided a trip to the 10-day injured list despite being held out of the second game of Friday's twin-bill against the Cubs after being hit in the right wrist by a pitch in the front-end of the doubleheader. X-rays came back negative, so it seems like he's avoided a potentially serious injury. He should be considered day-to-day for the moment. Paul DeJong will fill-in at shortstop on Saturday afternoon. • Edmundo Sosa (wrist) held out of Cardinals lineup
Edmundo Sosa (wrist) was held out of the Cardinals lineup for the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Cubs.

Advice: Sosa was removed from the first game after being drilled in the wrist by a pitch thrown by Tommy Nance. The Cardinals have not yet provided an update on his status, though he's presumably getting X-rays done to see if there's any structural damage. Paul DeJong is starting in his place at shortstop and batting eighth for the Cardinals. NBCSportsEDGE.com Friday, 3:48 pm

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Friday that Pablo Lopez (shoulder) is ready to return from the injured list.

Advice: Lopez made a successful two-inning appearances in a minor league rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday night. • Borucki suspended 3 games for hitting Kiermaier
Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports that Ryan Borucki will get a three game suspension for hitting Kevin Kiermaier.

Advice: Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo also got a game for his involvement. Borucki will apparently appeal the decision. The plunking came two days after Kiermaier took a card with information that fell out of the holder by Alejandro Kirk on a play at the plate, and Toronto wasn't happy with it. Now Borucki likely won't be happy with a couple days of suspension.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Thursday, 3:37 pm

  • Pablo Lopez (shoulder) set for rehab appearance
Pablo Lopez (shoulder) will make a rehab appearance with Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday night.

Advice: Lopez could then join the Marlins for an appearance in the final week of the regular season. It's too late for him to be built back up into a normal starter-type workload, but that he's made it back at all is encouraging given the July diagnosis of a right rotator cuff strain. He can hopefully carry a clean bill of health into 2022. NBCSportsEDGE.com Thursday, 12:56 pm

  • DeGrom (elbow) throws 20 pitches off mound Tue.
Jacob deGrom (elbow) threw 20 pitches off the mound at Fenway Park on Tuesday.

Advice: DeGrom has another similar throwing session scheduled for later this week, but all has gone well so far. He's still hoping to pitch in a game before the season ends, but it will likely be an abbreviated appearance at best. Still, deGrom could go into the offseason with some peace of mind, which isn't a small thing.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Tuesday, 12:29 pm

Jacob deGrom (elbow) threw from the mid-slope of the mound on Saturday.

Advice: The next step will be throwing from the full mound. DeGrom has been moved along carefully since being diagnosed with the partial tear of the UCL in his elbow earlier this summer, but all involved say it's healed now. • Jeff McNeil blasts go-ahead homer to beat Phillies
Jeff McNeil blasted a go-ahead home run in the seventh inning on Sunday night, powering the Mets to a 3-2 victory over the Phillies.

Advice: McNeil led off the fifth inning with a single and came around to score on a two-run double by Dominic Smith. He then crushed a 417-foot shot off of Phillies right-hander Kyle Gibson in the seventh inning, giving the Mets their 3-2 edge. • Sosa doubles twice as Cardinals top Padres
Edmundo Sosa doubled twice and drove in two runs on Sunday in a win over the Padres.

Advice: Sosa had a pair of RBI doubles in this one; his first scoring Tyler O'Neill in the first, his second bringing home O'Neill in the fifth. The normal utility infielder has performed admirably this year since taking over everyday duties, and the pair of hits has his season slash up to .277/.348/.405 over 264 at-bats.
