      Advice: After going 0-for-1 as a pinch hitter in a 9-4 loss during the matinee, Smith got the start at shortstop in the nightcap and swiped his first bag of the year in a wild 12-11 victory. The 26-year-old infielder has been productive of late, slashing .297/.422/.541 over the last 12 games with a homer, five RBI and nine runs, but his 6:14 BB:K during that stretch -- not to mention his .373 BABIP on the season -- suggests regression is coming for his batting average.       Advice: Outside of a solo homer to Bryan De La Cruz in the fourth inning, Stone was exceptional, yielding one run for a third consecutive start. He's lasted at least six innings in three straight outings, dragging his ERA down to 3.55 through 38.0 frames. With Bobby Miller (shoulder) nearing the start of a rehab assignment, Stone could only have a couple more go-arounds in the Dodgers' rotation, with a date at San Francisco on tap for Tuesday.       Advice: Witt collected his fifth long ball of the campaign Wednesday, tagging Joel Payamps for a long ball to lead off the eighth inning. Witt also notched a double in the first inning and was brought in on a Michael Massey sacrifice fly.       McArthur picked up the save Wednesday against the Brewers after a perfect two-thirds of an inning.

      Advice: The ball was handed to Tyler Duffey for the ninth, but after Duffey walked two batters and gave up a double to Brice Turang, McArthur was forced to step in and close the door. The save snapped McArthur out of a two-game slump in which he allowed five runs (four earned) and was charged with two blown saves and two losses.       Isaac Paredes went 1-for-3 with a double and drove in the Rays’ lone run in Wednesday evening’s loss to the White Sox.

      Advice: The hard-hitting 25-year-old infielder got the Rays on the board first with a run-scoring double off of Chris Flexen in the fourth inning. That would wind up being their only tally in the contest though. Paredes also drew a walk in the ballgame, reaching base safely in two of his four plate appearances.     • Montgomery goes seven strong in victory over Reds
      Jordan Montgomery delivered a strong performance in Wednesday night’s victory over the Reds, allowing just two runs on seven hits over his seven frames.

      Advice: The 31-year-old southpaw walked two and struck out two batters on the evening. The Reds pushed a run across in the second inning on a run-scoring single by Stuart Fairchild, then added another on an RBI double by Jeimer Candelario in the fourth. That was the extent of the damage. Montgomery got 10 swings and misses on 95 pitches on the night, registering a CSW of 29 percent.       Brent Rooker went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the Rangers.

      Advice: Rooker finished off a three-hit effort with a towering 427-foot blast -- his ninth round-tripper of the season -- to straightaway center field in the seventh inning to cap off Oakland’s nine-run offensive explosion in the front-end of Wednesday’s twin bill.       Gavin Stone yielded one run over seven innings on Wednesday in a win over the Marlins.

      Advice: Stone was excellent during Wednesday afternoon’s matinee at Dodger Stadium, limiting Miami’s floundering lineup to just a fourth-inning solo shot from Bryan De La Cruz over seven frames. He finished with four strikeouts and didn’t hand out a free pass. The 25-year-old former top pitching prospect has held his own this season in his first extended chance in the big leagues, compiling a respectable 3.55 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 27/13 K/BB ratio across 38 innings (seven starts).
