    Suarez picked up a save against Atlanta in the first game of a doubleheader Monday, retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

    Advice: For most of the contest it seemed unlikely that Suarez would be deployed, as Atlanta got out to an early lead and was ahead 5-0 through four innings. However, San Diego fought back and took a one-run lead in the eighth, giving Suarez a chance to close things out in the ninth. He did so easily, needing just seven pitches to set down the side in order. Suarez had been used in the eighth inning to face the heart of Atlanta's order his previous time on the mound, but there's little doubt that he's San Diego's primary closer.   • Strikes out eight in win
    Yamamoto (5-1) earned the win Monday over the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out eight over 6.1 innings.

    Advice: Yamamoto was able to rebound after being not at his best last Monday versus the Giants. The rookie right-hander put together his fifth quality start in his last six outings, though the win was briefly endangered after Elieser Hernandez gave up a pair of solo home runs in the eighth inning. Yamamoto is at a 3.17 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 61:11 K:BB through 54 innings over 10 starts this season.     Cease allowed five runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out five batters over four innings in a no-decision against Atlanta in the first game of Monday's doubleheader.

    Advice: This was Cease's worst outing as a Padre, as he pitched a season-low four frames and gave up a season-high nine hits. He had previously given up five earned runs in an outing, but that came over six frames against Philadelphia. Cease was uncharacteristically hurt by the long ball Monday -- after giving up just three homers across his first nine starts, he yielded a pair of home runs (though both were solo shots) versus Atlanta.   • Worst start of season versus Angels
    Valdez (3-2) allowed eight runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Monday versus the Angels.

    Advice: Valdez followed up his start of seven shutout innings versus the Athletics with a dud Monday. He was doing fine until the Angels rallied for seven runs in the fifth, including three-run home runs by Nolan Schanuel and Logan O'Hoppe and a solo shot from Jo Adell. Valdez is now at a 4.32 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 34:12 K:BB through 41.2 innings over seven starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road in Seattle.   • Daniel Hudson works perfect ninth for save
    Daniel Hudson pitched a perfect ninth for his third save Monday against the Diamondbacks.

  • Slade Cecconi gives up six runs in bulk role
    After taking over for opener Joe Mantiply, Slade Cecconi gave up six runs in five innings Monday in a loss to the Dodgers.

    Advice: Mantiply did his part in the first and Cecconi kept it going with a scoreless second, but he went on to five up three homers in the third inning. It was impressive how Cecconi rebounded with three scoreless innings afterwards, but the damage was done. Cecconi is now 1-4 with a 6.12 ERA, and his rotation spot appears to be in jeopardy.   • Allows run but converts save
    Estevez allowed a run on two hits and a walk without striking out a batter over one inning, earning the save in Monday's 9-7 win over the Astros.

    Advice: Estevez's last two outings came in non-save situations after he blew a save May 10 versus the Royals. The closer is now 7-for-10 in save chances this season, though there are some warning signs reemerging after he struggled late in 2023. He's now at a 5.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB through 15.2 innings this season.     Detmers allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out three over four innings in a no-decision versus the Astros on Monday.

    Advice: Detmers' run of poor pitching continued. Five of the six runs came on home runs by Jose Altuve and Mauricio Dubon. Detmers has allowed at least four runs in each of his last six starts, and this was the fourth time in that span he's surrendered multiple homers. The southpaw has an ugly 5.80 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 59:19 K:BB through 54.1 innings across 10 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Guardians.   • Reid Detmers tagged for six runs by Astros
    Reid Detmers surrendered six runs in four innings Monday in a no-decision versus the Astros.

    Advice: Victimized by a couple of infield singles, Detmers was unfortunate not to be out of the inning before José Altuve hit a three-run homer in the second. Still, this was another disappointing outing for the 24-year-old, who has given up 32 earned runs over 31 2/3 innings in his last six starts.
