• Steven Matz (back) unlikely to make next start
Steven Matz (back) is unlikely to make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the White Sox.

Advice: The interesting wrinkle here is that the Cardinals decision to bump up Kyle Gibson and Miles Mikolas creates an opening on Tuesday against the Mets. The most likely candidate to fill that void would be pitching prospect Sem Robberse, who would be taking the ball on regular rest, and has been excellent this season for Triple-A Memphis. It’s a storyline worth monitoring this weekend. Rotoworld 27 minutes ago

  • Peter Lambert can’t get out of fourth against MIA
Peter Lambert went 3 1/3 innings while allowing four runs in a no-decision against the Marlins on Thursday.

Advice: Lambert was fortunate to get a no-decision with the Rockies providing just enough offensive support to keep him from the loss. The 27-year-old allowed five hits with three walks against three strikeouts in a middling — at best — effort against a mediocre Miami lineup. Lambert will not be a recommended option next week against the Giants. Rotoworld 29 minutes ago

  • Shaky vs. Marlins
Lambert did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Marlins, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out three.

Advice: The Marlins got to Lambert quickly, scoring twice in the opening inning before tacking on runs in the third and the fourth. The 27-year-old Lambert's struggled in his two starts this year, allowing 10 runs in 6.1 innings. He's fared better out of the bullpen, however, pinching to a 1.88 ERA over 14.1 innings in relief. Still, the right-hander figures to remain in the rotation while Kyle Freeland (elbow) is sidelined. Lambert's currently scheduled for a home start against the Giants in his next outing. • Report: Paul Skenes starting Sunday at Triple-A
MLP Pipeline’s Jonathan Mayo reports Paul Skenes will make his next start on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Advice: There was some social media buzz that Skenes could get the call this weekend to join Pittsburgh’s starting rotation, but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards. The 21-year-old top pitching prospect has reeled off six dominant outings at Triple-A Indianapolis to open the year, posting a surreal 0.39 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 41/6 K/BB ratio across 23 innings of work. It’s not going to be much longer, but it doesn’t appear that Skenes is coming up this weekend. Rotoworld 41 minutes ago
  • Strikes out nine
Cabrera didn't factor into Thursday's decision against the Rockies, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out nine over four innings.

Advice: Three of the Rockies' four runs against Cabrera came on a Jacob Stallings homer in the second inning. Cabrera had the strikeout pitch working Thursday, though his command remained inconsistent, as he'd eventually need 91 pitches to record 12 outs. Cabrera's now been held to fewer than five innings in consecutive starts. His ERA is up to 6.05 with a 1.50 WHIP and 30:10 K:BB through his first four starts (19.1 innings). Cabrera's currently lined up for a tough road matchup with the Dodgers in his next outing. Rotowire.com 43 minutes ago

  • Nathan Eovaldi exits start due to groin tightness
Nathan Eovaldi was removed from Thursday’s start against the Nationals due to right groin tightness.

Advice: Eovaldi will continue to undergo further evaluation after exiting Thursday afternoon’s showdown with a trainer at 92 pitches through 5 2/3 scoreless frames. The 34-year-old righty finished with eight strikeouts and only issued a pair of walks. He was unlikely to work much further into the contest, but the fact that he’s dealing with a groin issue certainly puts his next start in serious jeopardy. There should be some clarity on his status in the coming days. Rotoworld Today, 1:19 pm

  • Enters no contest plea
Urias pleaded no contest Wednesday to a misdemeanor domestic battery charge related to his Sept. 3 arrest in Los Angeles on suspicion of domestic violence, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.

Advice: As a result of the no contest plea, Urias had his four other misdemeanor charges stemming from the arrest dismissed. He was placed on 36 months of summary probation and ordered to complete 30 days of community labor, as well as a year-long domestic violence counseling course. Additionally, the 27-year-old left-hander must pay a domestic violence fund fee, not possess any weapons, not use any force or violence, pay restitution to the victim and abide by a protective order. Currently a free agent after his contract with the Dodgers expired following the 2023 season, Urias isn't yet facing discipline from Major League Baseball, though the league launched its own investigation into the Sept. 3 arrest that could be completed soon now that a resolution to Urias' legal situation has been reached. Urias has previously served a suspension related to MLB's domestic violence policy, as he was handed a 20-game ban in August 2019 for an incident that occurred earlier that year. • Exits with groin injury
Eovaldi was removed from his start Thursday against the Nationals with right groin tightness, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: Eovaldi didn't look comfortable on the mound after making a pitch in the sixth inning, prompting a visit from the Rangers' training staff and his eventual removal. The severity of the veteran righty's injury remains unknown, but the team may provide more information after Thursday's game. Eovaldi threw 5.1 shutout innings while striking out eight batters before his early exit. Rotowire.com Today, 1:06 pm

  • Braxton Garrett makes likely final rehab start
Braxton Garrett (shoulder) fired five shutout innings on Wednesday in a minor league rehab start for Triple-A Jacksonville.

Advice: Garrett finished with three strikeouts, built up his pitch count to 61 (33 strikes) and averaged 90.7 mph in his likely final tune-up before rejoining Miami’s starting rotation mix for his season debut. The 26-year-old hurler has been out since spring training due to a left shoulder impingement and a setback after experiencing a “dead arm” phase. He’ll likely take the ball on Monday against the Dodgers in his season debut, barring an unexpected development. Rotoworld Today, 1:03 pm
