  • Moving back to bench role
Madrigal is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against Atlanta.

Advice: Madrigal had started at second base or third base in seven of the past eight games, but his opportunities to pick up playing time in the infield are likely to be more limited moving forward after shortstop Dansby Swanson and second baseman Nico Hoerner both recently returned from injuries. The 27-year-old hasn't done much with the opportunities he's received with the Cubs this season, slashing .213/.276/.250 with no home runs and one stolen base across 87 plate appearances. • Removed from 40-man roster
The Athletics designated Diaz for assignment Thursday.

Advice: At multiple points in the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Diaz looked to bea mainstay in Oakland's lineup, but he failed to make the Opening Day roster coming out of spring training and struggled to get going at a hitter-friendly environment at Triple-A Las Vegas, slashing just .204/.288/.327 over 111 plate appearances. He's still just 23 years old, so Diaz could draw interest on waivers from a team that thinks it might be able to help him tap back into the promise he displayed earlier in his career. • Retreats to bench Thursday
Short is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs.

Advice: Austin Riley (side) remains out of the lineup for a 10th consecutive game, but after starting each of the previous nine games in Riley's stead, Short will give way to Luke Williams at third base Thursday. Atlanta is still seemingly viewing Riley as day-to-day, so Short's run of regular playing time at the hot corner could come to an end as soon as this weekend in Pittsburgh. • Leads off against lefty again
Monasterio started at second base and went 0-for-4 in Wednesday's 1-0 loss to the Marlins.

Advice: Monasterio started in each of the Brewers' three games in Miami and led off the past two contests, reaching base four times while contributing a home run and a stolen base during that stretch. Milwaukee faced lefty starters in each of those contests, so while Monasterio looks like he'll remain a key part of the lineup in those matchups, he's still operating in the short side of a platoon at second base with the lefty-hitting Brice Turang. • Strong series against Jays
Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run scored Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Lopez had a strong series against Toronto, as he collected six hits across 12 at-bats with an RBI and a run scored. He entered the three-game set having hit just .171 with one extra-base hit across his first 11 games in May. Lopez is still hitting only .223/.284/.238 with two stolen bases across 145 plate appearances for the season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:23 am
  • Getting rest Thursday
Polanco is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees.

Advice: After missing seven consecutive starts due to a right hamstring injury, Polanco made his return to the lineup in Wednesday's 7-3 loss, starting at second base while going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. The Mariners haven't indicated that Polanco experienced a setback with his hamstring Wednesday, so his absence Thursday is likely just a matter of maintenance due to the quick turnaround for the series finale, which begins at 12:35 p.m. ET. Dylan Moore will fill in for Polanco at the keystone. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:18 am
  • Begins rehab assignment
Sano (knee) went 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout in his first rehab game with the Arizona Complex League Angels on Wednesday.

Advice: Sano is recovering from left knee inflammation, an injury which has kept him on the shelf for the entirety of May. He will eventually move up to a higher affiliate as he works his way back to the Angels' active roster. Sano was getting regular playing time before getting hurt and that should continue when he returns, especially with all the injuries the Halos are dealing with. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:30 am

  • Homers in third straight
McMahon went 2-for-6 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's win over Oakland.

Advice: McMahon went hitless in his first four at-bats before adding a single in the ninth and a two-run homer in the top of the 12th, which would end up being the game winner. It marked the third baseman's third consecutive game with a home run, and he's now up to five long balls in May to go along with 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. McMahon has also hit safely in 10 straight games. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 4:29 am
  • Swats late homer
Diaz went 1-for-5 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to the Red Sox.

Advice: Diaz knocked in a run with a groundout in the second inning and added a solo shot in the ninth. He's up to four homers this season, three of which have come in his last 12 games, a span in which he's hitting .313 (15-for-48). The infielder is slashing .255/.321/.360 with 25 RBI, 22 runs scored, no stolen bases and nine doubles over 50 contests this season. Diaz had a career-high 22 homers in 2023, but that was an anomaly for him from a power standpoint -- he's much more of a contact-first hitter. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 7:34 pm
