Moneyballers!
Thanks for making this a really fun season.
Clearly a new record in terms of overall engagement & activity. In 2016, 9 of us made 30+ moves & 5 made 20-29 moves. In 2017, we dipped down to 6 of us making 30+ & 5 making 20-29 moves. In 2018, 13 of us made 30+ moves, 6 of us made 20+. This year? 13 of us made more than FORTY Moves, and 17 made more than 30! We also had more teams than ever hit or come close to hitting the IP max----at least 6 or 7? (Yahoo unhelpfully shut down their Full Standings page today, thus making it difficult for me to quickly discern the exact numbers, but trust me, there was notable progress here, too.) . Safe to say that the improvement in each of these participation metrics is in part thanks to the new NA rules we put in place this season: ie expanding to 5 NA slots and only allowing 5 NAs w/out MLB experience.
Anyway, we also had yet another set of great Moneyball finishes in 2019.
First Place, as has become the custom, however, was not much of a finish. But still fun to behold the excellence of Chico. FOUR IN A ROW! Congratulations, PW. And, indeed, his string of seasons with a 1,000+ point victory margin was extended, doggone it! HOWEVER, the magnetic pull of the pack is in evidence. First of all, he dropped below 16,000 this season. And indeed, his margin of victory fell once again, from both 2016 (1,535), 2017 (1456), and 2018, where he finished 1,118 & 1,224 ahead of 2nd & 3rd respectively----to this year's 1,047 and 1,096 pt margins. But alas, he is now one season away from tying Chubby's record five straight championships! If you the rest of you refuse to step up, the Ballers will agree to put a stop to this streak in 2020.
Cotter gave Squirrels a real scare, but JR held on for his best finish yet at 2nd, bumping off from last year's 3rd, which was his first time in the Top 5. Way to go, Squirrels! This is also the Squirrels' fifth straight Top 10 performance. But will he be the one to bring down Chico?
Cotter's 3rd place finish is truly impressive. After a 1-year sabbatical, Cotter inherited a rather putrid team in 2018, blew it up, & brought it immediately to 7th. This season, another leap to 3rd. Well done, Cotter!
The Ballers finished fourth for the second straight year, and Top 5 for the 3rd straight! This is my fifth Top 5. Way to go, me! But 11 points shy of my 2018 total, so, well, crap!
Rounding out the Top 5 with a stunning final couple weeks are the Dirty Hippies! Wow! Congrats, Sam! My early September predictions were fairly decent, but not w/ Hippy, as I had him lingering in 9th---how little I knew! This is Hippie's second Top 10 finish, the other coming last season when, in an equally thrilling finish, Hippy was edged out of the Top 5 by Chubby by a mere 30 points, finishing 6th. The tables were turned this season, w/ Hippy beating out Chubby by 53 pts & Bingus by 64. I don't remember a 3-way 5th Place battle that tight. [Oddly, Hippies finished w/ 1368 pts and Chubby w/ 1,315---last year, Hippie finished with 1,315!]
Other notables!
* Of those who finished in the Top 5, only Cotter & Hippies beat their own 2018 totals.
* Chubby's ELEVEN straight Top 5 streak has come to an end. Is this the end of elite Chubby? Is it the end of Chubby entirely? He once again appears to be reconsidering his future as Moneyballer. We all hope he stays to enjoy the implementation of his excellent 3 Bonus NA draft proposal, alongside a new 26-man regular roster---- but if he doesn't, well, what a run!
* . Bingsus ALMOST had his first Top 5 since his 2010 Moneyball Championship. But wow, what a leap from his 16th place 2016 finish! 16th to 7th. Next season, DJC!\
* Tri-State BARELY missed the Top 10, but miss it he did! Another end of an era. Sorry, Dave, but quite a run! Now Chubby remains as the sole Moneyball to have finished in Top 10 every season.
* In just his third full year in the league, Corktown finishes Top 10! for the second time, bumping from 9th last to year to 8th in 2019 Well done, Cork!
* . Kawasaki! In his 3rd season since inheriting & dismantling Cotter's Top 5 2017 squad, Munenori's ascent has commenced. But how far will he rise in 2020? Will he rise at all? Is he a lock for Top 5?
* Steel City in the Moneyball house! Maybe the first Moneyballer to make the Top 10 in their first season --- unless Maddon's 3rd place finish in 2009 was his first season? Nick? (Yahoo is failing me at the moment.) . Anyway, Congrats, Travis! (And Maddon, I take it you'll have a new name in 2020! And hopefully a return to the Top 10?!
* Big Dog barely held on a repeat finish at 12th, staving off Degroman, who moved from 15th in 2018 to 13th.
* Sticks was the earliest ever team to clinch 16th, I'm pretty sure. Nice work?
Any of you bottom-dwellers geared up for a return to greatness next season? I look fwd to finding out. See y'all around Super Bowl!
