    • Edwin Díaz returns from IL as Mets’ closer
Mets activated RHP Edwin Díaz from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: Díaz is slated to resume closing immediately for the Mets, though the Mets won’t want him to go long without pitching if they don’t generate a save chance these next two days. Díaz missed the minimum 15 days with a shoulder impingement. Rotoworld Thursday, 11:48 am

    • Hit with first loss
Miller (1-1) took the loss Wednesday, giving up a solo home run in one-third of an inning as the A's fell 5-4 to the Padres.

Advice: With one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Jackson Merrill drove the first pitch he saw from Miller down the right-field line for a walk-off homer. The Oakland closer may be wearing down -- over his last eight appearances he's served up three long balls and been scored upon four times, leading to a 5.59 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB through 9.2 innings during that stretch. • Efficient in win
Soriano (4-5) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five over eight-plus innings to earn the win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Advice: This was the longest outing of Soriano's career, and it was a good one. He had plenty of run support early and pitched into the ninth inning, ending the start with 97 pitches (63 strikes). He's quickly becoming one of the Angels' most reliable starters, having covered at least six innings in five straight appearances. He's at a 3.48 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB through 72.1 innings over 14 appearances (12 starts) this year. The 25-year-old's strikeout numbers have taken a hit from where they were last year when he was a reliever, but there's still value in a pitcher that can eat innings. He's projected to make his next start at home versus the Brewers. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 10:12 pm

    • José Soriano goes eight frames in win over D-Backs
José Soriano allowed two runs with five strikeouts over eight innings in a win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Advice: Soriano was excellent on Wednesday, holding the D-Backs scoreless into the eighth inning before Christian Walker finally got to him with a solo homer. Soriano retuned for the ninth to attempt a complete game but gave up a leadoff single that would end his day. Though, the inherited runner would come in to score. The 25-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 3.48 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 60/28 K/BB ratio across 72 1/3 innings. He’s set to take on the Brewers in Anaheim on Tuesday. Rotoworld Wednesday, 9:32 pm

    • Mason Miller serves up walk-off homer to Padres
Mason Miller allowed one run in the ninth inning on Wednesday and was saddled with a loss against the Padres.

Advice: Miller was called upon in a tie ballgame and wound up surrendering a walk-off solo shot to Padres rookie Jackson Merrill. It was just his first loss of the year and second run he’s allowed in four relief appearances this month. The flame-throwing 25-year-old righty has been one of the best high-leverage relievers in baseball and this looks like just a momentary hiccup in an otherwise stellar breakthrough campaign. • Receives injection for back
Munoz had an MRI and bone scan on his back come back clean, but he received an injection Tuesday to address the lingering soreness, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Advice: The right-hander last pitched Sunday in Kansas City and has made just two appearances in June while battling through the back issue. Munoz hasn't officially been declared unavailable, but the Mariners may try to stay away from him for another day or two as he recovers. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 4:10 pm
    • Set to regain closer role
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Wednesday that Diaz (shoulder) will immediately become the team's closer upon his activation from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Advice: Diaz had been part of a committee at closer for the Mets prior to landing on the IL with a right shoulder impingement in late May. However, Mendoza is now ready to restore Diaz to his old role beginning with Thursday's contest against the Marlins. Diaz has converted four of his nine save chances this season while holding a 5.40 ERA and 30:7 K:BB over 20 innings. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 1:13 pm

    • Edwin Diaz to jump right back into closer’s role
Mets’ manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed Wednesday that Edwin Diaz will jump right back into the closer’s role upon his return from the injured list on Thursday.

Advice: Mendoza told reporters, “For us to make a run at this, we’re going to need Diaz to be Edwin Diaz.” That means Reed Garrett and Adam Ottavino will shift back into their high-leverage roles in the seventh and eighth innings. Before landing on the injured list with his right shoulder impingement, Diaz had posted a troublesome 5.40 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 30/7 K/BB ratio across 20 innings of work through his first 20 appearances on the year. • Set to be activated Thursday
Mets manager Carlos Mendoz said Tuesday that Diaz (shoulder) will be activated from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Diaz is done with his rehab assignment after making two scoreless appearances with High-A Brooklyn. However, the Mets will wait a couple more days before returning the reliever to the active roster. Mendoza didn't divulge plans for Diaz's immediate role, but he should serve as the club's closer sooner rather than later. Diaz has been out since late May with a right shoulder impingement.
