    • Clay Holmes blows save against Red Sox
Clay Holmes allowed two home runs on two hits in a blown save on Friday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Holmes pushed the Red Sox to their final strike before Masataka Yoshida sent a sinker deep into the right field seats. The home run was just the second Holmes has allowed this season, matching his total from last season. It was also his fifth blown save in what’s been an up-and-down season so far. • Aaron Nola strikes out eight in win
Aaron Nola allowed three earned runs across six innings in a win Friday against the Braves. He struck out eight without walking a batter.

Advice: Nola was fantastic in this one. His 21 swings-and-misses were the most he’s forced in a game this season and first time he’s hit that total since June 5th of last year. His vaunted knuckle curve stymied the Braves all night and Nola looked dominant despite the three runs. Rotoworld Today, 7:47 pm

    • Delivers quality start
Nola (10-4) yielded three runs on five hits over six innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over Atlanta.

Advice: Nola got through three shutout frames before coughing up a two-run shot to Austin Riley in the fourth inning. Ozzie Albies then knocked a solo homer in the sixth. It was the first time that Nola gave up multiple home runs since May 31 after allowing three in the entire month of June. He forced a season-high 21 swinging strikes, with 10 coming on the knuckle curve. He's delivered quality starts in nine of his last 10 outings, including four straight. During that 10-start stretch, the veteran righty has posted a 3.34 ERA while going 6-2. Nola will carry a 3.48 ERA into his next outing, which is currently lined up to be at home against the Dodgers. • Slated for flat-ground throwing
Manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Montgomery (knee) will begin throwing off flat ground Saturday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Advice: Lovullo noted that Montgomery is still dealing with a bit of inflammation in his right knee, but the team believes he'll be in good enough condition to throw. Assuming all goes well Saturday, the 31-year-old southpaw will likely be given the green light to begin throwing off a mound within the next several days. Rotowire.com Today, 6:35 pm
    • Montgomery set to throw off flat ground Saturday
Jordan Montgomery (knee) is scheduled to throw off of flat ground on Saturday.

Advice: Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Friday that Montgomery is still dealing with some inflammation in his knee, but the expectation is that he’ll be good enough to resume throwing on Saturday. Depending on how Saturday’s session goes, the club may be able to give a timeline for when the 31-year-old southpaw may be able to return. Rotoworld Today, 6:03 pm
    • Idle against southpaw
Mullins is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Oakland.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Mullins will avoid a matchup with LHP Hogan Harris on Friday, giving way to Colton Cowser in center field. Mullins is slashing .220/.265/.388 with nine homers and 16 stolen bases across 268 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 4:13 pm

    • Idle Friday
Canha is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Reds.

Advice: Canha has three hits in his last 39 at-bats and will be absent from the starting nine for the second time in three games. Gio Urshela will play first base while Matt Vierling fills the hot corner. Rotowire.com Today, 2:17 pm

    • Mark Canha not in Tigers lineup on Friday night
Mark Canha is not in the Tigers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s showdown against the Reds in Cincinnati.

Advice: It’s the second time in the last three games that Canha has been excluded from the lineup, so perhaps he’s battling something minor. Gio Urshela will cover first base in his absence on Friday night and will bat seventh against Carson Spiers and the Reds. Rotoworld Today, 2:12 pm

    • Scheduled for follow-up MRI
Friedl (hamstring) is scheduled for a follow-up MRI exam soon, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Advice: If the results of the exam show progress, Friedl will likely be cleared to begin running and participating in more advanced baseball activities. The outfielder said he's playing catch and swinging off a tee. Friedl was eligible to be activated off the 10-day injured list July 4. Rotowire.com Today, 5:56 am
