      Hayden Wesneski surrendered three runs with seven strikeouts over four innings in a no-decision against the Giants on Wednesday.

      Advice: All three of the runs Wesneski allowed came on a pair of homers in the second inning. With a runner on, Michael Conforto took him deep for a two-run shot to put the Giants on the board. David Villar followed with a solo shot to go back-to-back. Wesneski retired all six batters in the third and fourth innings before his day was done. He struck out seven.       Luis Gil labored through 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday against the Mets. He allowed five earned runs with four walks and just two strikeouts.

      Advice: There’s been a hard shift in Gil’s season over the past week. He gave up 18 ER in his first 80 innings and 12 ER in his last 5 2/3 frames. He looked uncomfortable and weirdly enough, these last two starts he threw his lowest percentage of fastballs and two of his three highest percentages of changeups in any start this season. It’s important to note that he threw only 136 2/3 innings between 2021 and 2023, so the 85 2/3 he’s already thrown this season are already substantial given his lengthy injury history.

      Sean Manaea pitched five innings before a long rain delay on Wednesday against the Yankees. He allowed just two hits and no runs while walking five and punching out three in a win.

      Advice: This was almost the night Manaea would finally complete six innings for the first time since May 13th. Almost, that is, until a massive thunderstorm held this game up for almost two hours when he had thrown 77 pitches through five innings.       Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, two walks, and two runs scored in the Dodgers’ 4-0 win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

      Advice: Ohtani took Erick Fedde deep to lead off the first inning, setting a Dodgers record with an RBI in 10 straight games. He then drew a walk in the third and scored on a double by Freddie Freeman. Ohtani walked once again in the seventh to reach for the third time. The 29-year-old superstar is slashing .322/.402/.643 with 25 homers, 65 runs scored, 61 RBI, and 16 steals across 360 plate appearances as we reach the midway point of the season.       Gavin Stone tossed a complete-game shutout with seven strikeouts in a win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

      Advice: Stone made perhaps his best start of his career Wednesday against the White Sox, going a career-high nine scoreless innings for his first complete-game shutout. He scattered four hits and did not walk a batter, tossing 73-of-103 pitches for strikes with seven strikeouts. The 25-year-old right-hander has been outstanding on the season, posting a 2.73 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and a 70/25 K/BB ratio across 89 innings.       Erick Fedde allowed four runs with five strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Dodgers on Wednesday.

      Advice: Fedde served up a solo homer to Shohei Ohtani to lead off the first inning. He retired the next six batters before loading the bases with no outs in the third. Teoscar Hernandez drove a run in on a sacrifice fly before Freddie Freeman cleared the bases with a double. Fedde tossed three more scoreless frames, ending his day after six with five strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-hander will take a 3.23 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 91/25 K/BB ratio across 100 1/3 innings into a start against the Guardians in Cleveland on Tuesday.       Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wesneski will start Wednesday's game in San Francisco, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

      Advice: Wesneski has previously made three starts for the Cubs this season, though none have come since May 8. While he'll be available on four days' rest after having made his last relief appearance Friday, Wesneski probably isn't built up enough to handle a traditional starter's workload. The Cubs are likely to move Wesneski back to the bullpen following Wednesday's game, as he was merely added to the rotation this week to give left-hander Shota Imanaga an extra day of rest between starts.
