• Slated for mound work
Whitlock (oblique) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports.

Advice: Saturday will mark the first time Whitlock has thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list April 17 with a strained left oblique. Assuming all goes well, he will likely throw another few sessions before moving onto throwing against live hitters, at which point the Red Sox may decide to send the right-hander out on a rehab assignment. • Won't make another rehab start
Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Pivetta (elbow) does not need to make another rehab start, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Advice: Pivetta surrendered four runs over three-plus innings during his lone rehab start at Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. Despite his subpar performance, the Red Sox will waste no time returning the 31-year-old right-hander to their rotation, which has already been hit hard by injuries this season. Pivetta has given up one earned run across 11 innings through two starts this year, and he appears in line to make his return in Atlanta on Tuesday or Wednesday. Rotowire.com 44 minutes ago

  • Garrett Whitlock to throw bullpen on Saturday
Garrett Whitlock (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

Advice: The fact that the 27-year-old hurler has been cleared for mound work is obviously an encouraging development. If all goes well with Saturday’s session, we should get a clearer picture on a plan for when the Red Sox anticipate him being able to return. Rotoworld 47 minutes ago

  • Ends skid vs. Cubs
Ross did not factor into the decision Friday against the Cubs, allowing one run on six hits over six innings. He struck out four.

Advice: Ross was solid Friday, holding Chicago off the board until a Christopher Morel solo home run with two outs in the sixth inning. While Ross ultimately came away with a no-decision, he was able to stem a three-start losing streak -- he'd allowed 16 runs (13 earned) over 15 innings in that span. Overall, Ross is 1-3 with a 4.65 ERA, 1,55 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB through six starts (31 innings) this season. He's currently scheduled for a road matchup with Kansas City in his next outing. • Has protruding disc in back
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Friday that an MRI showed that Matz has a "protruding disc" in his lower back, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Matz was placed on the 15-day IL on Friday after sustaining a lower-back injury in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers. Matz received a pain-killing injection for the injury Friday, and the southpaw will be reevaluated early next week. He went 1-2 over six starts with a 6.18 ERA and 1.73 WHIP before landing on the injured list. Rotowire.com 55 minutes ago

  • Excellent vs. Milwaukee
Wesneski didn't factor into the decision Friday, allowing three hits and two walks over 6.1 scoreless innings. He struck out eight.

Advice: Wesneski was dominant Friday, shutting out the Brewers while matching his career high with eight punchouts. However, the Cubs bullpen couldn't maintain a 1-0 lead as Wesneski was eventually stuck with a no-decision. The 26-year-old right-hander has allowed just one earned run over 10.1 innings in two starts. Overall, Wesneski's 2-0 with a stellar 0.54 ERA, 0.72 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB across 16.2 innings in a swing role this season. While Justin Steele (hamstring), Kyle Hendricks (back) and Jordan Wicks (forearm) are all nearing returns, Wesneski has certainly made a compelling case to remain in Chicago's rotation. • May require rehab assignment
Manager Matt Quatraro said Friday that sending Marsh (elbow) on a rehab assignment before returning from the IL "would be a smart thing to do," Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Marsh has been on the injured list since April 25 due to a bruised right elbow. He threw a bullpen session Monday and did so again Friday, though he will likely need to face live hitters before he makes his rehab appearance. Rotowire.com 58 minutes ago

  • Rangers place Nathan Eovaldi (groin) on 15-day IL
Rangers placed RHP Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list with a right groin strain.

Advice: Eovaldi suffered the injury while twirling a gem against the Nationals on Thursday afternoon. The Rangers have not yet commented on how long they expect the 34-year-old right-hander to be sidelined for. Yerry Rodriguez was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock to take his place on the roster for the time being. Rotoworld Today, 2:42 pm

  • Potential option for Sunday
Manoah (shoulder) is throwing a side session Friday and is an option to start Sunday against the Nationals, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Advice: Toronto has yet to name a starter for Sunday's contest, and it could be Manoah if he checks out okay after Friday's throwing session. The right-hander was electric in his last rehab start Tuesday with 12 strikeouts and one run allowed over six scoreless innings, and the Blue Jays need to fill out their rotation in the wake of Yariel Rodriguez's back injury.
