Manager David Bell indicated this weekend that McLain, who underwent shoulder surgery in late March, should be ready to start swinging a bat soon, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "He's pretty close," Bell said. When he starts swinging, there will be a step-by-step progression from dry swinging to tee work to soft toss, etc. "It's a very well-thought out progression that he'll have to take his time with."

Advice: Bell alluded to McLain being ready for action at some point in August but also noted it's a long process between now and then. The 2021 first-rounder hit 16 home runs with an .864 OPS in his rookie season last year over 403 plate appearances, so his return could potentially give the Reds, a team that ranks just 21st in OPS, some extra pop down the stretch. Ray (elbow) struck out two and allowed no runs on one hit and one walk over 2.1 innings in his rehab appearance Sunday for Triple-A Sacramento.

Advice: Ray was one of three rehabbing Giants pitchers to take the bump for Sacramento on Sunday, with the lefty and Austin Warren (elbow) working behind starter Blake Snell (groin). Before moving up to Sacramento, Ray made four rehab starts in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, covering seven total innings while striking out 15 and allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks. Though his 2.1-inning appearance Sunday didn't represent a notable uptick in his workload, Ray still finished with 45 pitches (30 strikes) and turned in another clean outing. Ray looks to be building up for a starting role as he gears up for a return from Tommy John surgery, but he'll still likely need to get stretched out to around 75 pitches before the Giants are comfortable bringing him back from the 60-day injured list. Griffin Jax registered his seventh save of the season on Sunday afternoon, working a scoreless ninth inning to protect a three-run lead against the Athletics.

Advice: It’s the second straight week that Jax has secured a save on Sunday. Jhoan Duran threw 19 pitches in a blown save against the A’s on Friday night, but neither of the two hurlers worked during Saturday’s game, so it was a bit surprising to see Jax and not Duran to close this one out. Other than posting elite ratios and nabbing the occasional save though, it’s hard to count on Jax for much more from a fantasy perspective while Duran is still the primary option in the ninth inning.
