    • Shohei Ohtani slugs solo homer in win over White Sox
      Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, two walks, and two runs scored in the Dodgers’ 4-0 win over the White Sox on Wednesday.

      Advice: Ohtani took Erick Fedde deep to lead off the first inning, setting a Dodgers record with an RBI in 10 straight games. He then drew a walk in the third and scored on a double by Freddie Freeman. Ohtani walked once again in the seventh to reach for the third time. The 29-year-old superstar is slashing .322/.402/.643 with 25 homers, 65 runs scored, 61 RBI, and 16 steals across 360 plate appearances as we reach the midway point of the season.     • Roansy Contreras labors through three innings
      Roansy Contreras lasted just three-plus innings on Wednesday against the Athletics and allowed one earned run with two walks and two strikeouts.

      Advice: This was Contreras’ first start of the season and he was stretched out to 61 pitches after not topping 50 yet this season. Working as a starter, he leaned far more on his slider than he had in his relief appearances and threw it more often than his fastball. Contreras used that slider as his primary pitch often last season in Pittsburgh as his fastball effectiveness waned.     • Joining rotation Sunday
      Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Wednesday that Winckowski will start Sunday's game against the Padres in Boston, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

      Advice: Due to off days Thursday and next Monday, the Red Sox didn't need to add a fifth starter to the rotation until July 6, but Cora is electing to bring Winckowski into the rotation early. Brayan Bello had been lined up to start Sunday's game, but he'll instead get pushed back to next Wednesday in Miami and have extra time to regroup after he was lit up for seven earned runs over 2.1 innings in a loss to Toronto on Wednesday. While coming on in relief of Bello on Tuesday, Winckowski struck out eight and allowed two earned runs in six innings, so he looks to be fully stretched out enough to head into Sunday's start without any restrictions with his pitch count.     • Won't travel for start of road trip
      Astros manager Joe Espada said Wednesday that Verlander (neck) hasn't resumed playing catch and won't accompany the team to New York for this weekend's three-game series versus the Mets, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Verlander isn't eligible to return from the 15-day injured list until Monday, but with the Astros continuing their trip in Toronto and then Minnesota next week, the right-hander's absence for the start of the road swing wouldn't seem to inspire much optimism about his chances of being ready to make a start against the Blue Jays, and perhaps even the Twins. The Astros will likely wait and see if Verlander is able to take any meaningful steps forward in his recovery from the neck issue over the next few days while he's back in Houston before determining his status for the Toronto series.       David Festa will get the call to the major leagues and start Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: That was the speculation Tuesday, and the move has been confirmed. Festa had a 3.77 ERA and an 87/24 K/BB ratio in 59 2/3 innings for Triple-A Salt Lake.     • Workload 'going to start dwindling'
      White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Tuesday of Crochet that "we're going to start dwindling his workload down a little bit," the Associated Press reports.

      Advice: Crochet already sits at 94.1 innings in 2024 in his first pro season as a starting pitcher. He threw zero innings in 2022 and just 25 frames in 2023 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and his highest innings total in college at Tennessee was 65. Therefore, his workload being curtailed at some point was inevitable. Grifol didn't divulge any specifics in regards to pitch counts or innings totals for Crochet, indicating he'll be flexible start-to-start based on how efficient the pitcher is. The manager also didn't mention anything about Crochet being shut down completely at some point, although it's certainly possible that will happen.     • Buckles against Bucs
      Greene (5-3) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering six runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings as the Reds fell 9-5 to the Pirates. He struck out five.

      Advice: Aggressive baserunning helped Pittsburgh score three times in the first inning before adding three more in the third, and Cincy was never able to climb out of the hole. The loss was Greene's first since April 22 -- over the 10 starts in between, he'd posted a sharp 2.80 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 62:26 K:BB through 61 innings.       Gausman (6-6) picked up the win Tuesday in a 9-4 victory over the Red Sox, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out five.

      Advice: A Vladimir Guerrero error meant that Gausman squeaked out his seventh quality start of the season, but the rest of the damage off the right-hander came on a Rafael Devers solo shot in the second inning and a two-run blast over the Green Monster by Tyler O'Neill in the sixth. Gausman has been taken deep eight times over his last five outings, a stretch in which he's stumbled to a 4.45 ERA despite a 1.11 WHIP and 28:6 K:BB through 32.1 innings.       Cole (0-1) took the loss Tuesday as the Yankees fell 9-7 to the Mets, surrendering six runs on seven hits -- including four home runs -- and four walks over four innings. He failed to strike out a batter.

      Advice: Making his second start of the season after recovering from an elbow issue, Cole simply couldn't locate his pitches as he served up four or more long balls for only the second time in his career -- the other such start came against the Twins in June 2022. The veteran right-hander did throw 72 pitches (44 strikes) Tuesday, up from 62 in his season debut as the Yankees gradually increase his workload.
