    • Tigers place Kerry Carpenter on IL due to back
Tigers placed OF Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 27, with lumbar spine inflammation.

Advice: Carpenter’s back has been bothering him since the weekend, though the Tigers made no mention of it until today. It’s a big loss for the Tigers, as Carpenter has been easily the team’s best hitter (.283/.342/.572 in 163 PA). They’ll probably give Mark Canha a fair amount of DH time in the coming weeks and use Matt Vierling pretty regularly in the outfield, with Andy Ibáñez picking up some extra starts at third. • Lands on IL with back injury
The Tigers placed Carpenter on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with lumbar spine inflammation.

Advice: Carpenter first felt some soreness in his back over the weekend and had hoped it would dissipate in subsequent days, but that hasn't happened. As a result, he'll miss at least the next week and a half of action, with manager A.J. Hinch noting that Carpenter is without a clear timetable for a return while he awaits further testing, per Jason Beck of MLB.com. Akil Baddoo was called up from Triple-A Toledo and could see some time in the outfield while he's with the big club, but the Tigers might be more apt to lean on Wenceel Perez in right field and Matt Vierling in center during Carpenter's absence. • On bench for opening game
Carpenter is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates.

Advice: Carpenter will hit the bench for the first game of the day but should be back in the starting nine for the second contest of the twin bill. With Carpenter on the bench for Game 1, Wenceel Perez will slide over from center field and start in right field. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 6:32 am

    • Dealing with back tightness
Carter was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with lower-back tightness, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The 21-year-old missed some time in mid-May due to a back issue, and it apparently remains bothersome as the month comes to a close. Carter is without a hit in his past 20 at-bats, and the injury could help explain some of those struggles. It's unclear how long the young outfielder is expected to be sidelined, but the organization will likely want him to get some at-bats in the minors before he rejoins the big club. • Slumping Evan Carter hits IL with back tightness
Rangers placed OF Evan Carter on the 10-day injured list with a back sprain.

Advice: Carter will ostensibly swap places with fellow top prospect Wyatt Langford as he’ll get some extra time off in an effort to reset mentally after batting just .165 (15-for-91) with three homers and one steal over his last 30 contests. The 21-year-old top prospect hits the shelf in the midst of an 0-for-20 hitless streak at the dish dating back to May 10. It’s far too early to be concerned long-term with Carter, but this season has certainly been an unexpected speed bump following last year’s stellar late-season debut and playoff performance. • Headed to injured list
The Rangers will place Carter (undisclosed) on the 10-day injured list prior to Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: Carter has missed some time this month with a back issue, although it's unclear whether that's the injury that's sending him to the IL. The young outfielder is hitless over his last nine contests and has struggled mightily so far this season, slashing just .188/.272/.361. It's not clear how long Carter might be sidelined. • Slump continues
Carter went 0-for-2 in Sunday's 6-2 win over the Twins.

Advice: Carter's hitless run reached 20 consecutive at-bats, and he's just two for his last 38. With Wyatt Langford (hamstring) possibly set to return Tuesday, the Rangers could send Carter back down to the minors to fix whatever is not working for him right now. Rotowire.com May 27, 5:10 am

    • Blasts pair of home runs
Happ went 2-for-3 with two home runs, a walk and three RBI in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: Happ's two home runs were the only source of offense for the Cubs in Sunday's loss. He first had a two-run shot off Andrew Kittredge in the seventh before following that up with a solo blast against Ryan Helsley in the ninth. Happ doubled his home run total on the season and put together his first multiple RBI effort since April 16. He now has six hits over his last five games but is still slashing just .224/.335/.362 with 15 extra-base hits, 17 RBI, 25 runs and a 27:57 BB:K in 203 plate appearances. • Ian Happ homers twice as Cubs fall to Cardinals
Ian Happ blasted a pair of home runs on Sunday night and drove in three, but it wasn’t enough to power the Cubs to victory over the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Advice: Happ finally got the Cubs on the board with his 409-foot (107.1 mph EV) two-run shot off of right-hander Andrew Kittredge in the seventh inning. He then led off the ninth inning with a 425-foot (107.1 mph EV) solo shot off of Ryan Helsley that pulled the Cubs to within a run at 4-3. That would be as close as they would get. On the season, the 29-year-old outfielder is now hitting .224/.335/.362 with just four homers and 17 RBI. Rotoworld May 26, 9:20 pm
