      Advice: Foley came on in the ninth inning to protect a 1-0 Detroit lead, but the righty struggled and blew his first save of the season in 10 chances. He's still sitting with a solid 2.63 ERA overall and should remain the team's closer for now, though it's a fluid situation with Alex Lange, Shelby Miller and Andrew Chafin all potentially waiting in the wings if Foley stumbles again.       Alzolay (1-4) allowed three runs on four hits while retiring just a single batter to take the loss Friday against the Brewers.

      Advice: Alzolay came on with one out in the eighth inning and promptly got into trouble, allowing a couple of quick singles before recording an out. The Brewers also ran freely on Alzolay, stealing three bases while he was on the mound. It's been a rough start to the season for the righty, as he's saddled with a 5.54 ERA and has been removed from the closer's role in favor of Hector Neris.       Helsley tossed a perfect inning to earn a save over the White Sox on Friday.

      Advice: Helsely retired the 2-3-4 hitters in the White Sox lineup with just eight pitches to secure the 3-0 win. Since blowing a save chance in his season debut, Helsley has converted 11 consecutive opportunities while allowing one earned run over 16 innings.       Ryan Helsley picked up a save Friday against the White Sox without allowing a run in his inning of work.

      Advice: Helsley didn’t give up a hit, didn’t give up a walk, and didn’t pick up a strikeout. The right-hander needed just eight pitches — seven of those strikes — against a Chicago team that looked like it wanted to be anywhere else.       Jason Foley suffered a brutal blown save against the Yankees on Friday night, surrendering hits to all four batters that he faced.

      Advice: Yikes. In what was a terrific pitcher’s duel that had the Tigers leading 1-0 heading to the ninth inning, Foley immediately got off on the wrong foot by allowing a leadoff single to Aaron Judge. Alex Verdugo then dropped down a bunt single with third baseman Zach McKinstry playing back, setting the stage for Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton then ripped an RBI double into right field on the second pitch he saw, and Anthony Rizzo followed with a run-scoring single to walk it off.     • Won't make another rehab start
      Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Pivetta (elbow) won't require another rehab start and will return from the 15-day injured list to make his next start with Boston, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

      Advice: Pivetta surrendered four runs over three-plus innings during his lone rehab start at Triple-A Worcester on Thursday. Despite his subpar performance, the Red Sox will waste no time returning the 31-year-old right-hander to their rotation, which has already been hit hard by injuries this season. Pivetta has given up one earned run across 11 innings through two starts in 2024. He appears in line to make his return to the rotation in Atlanta on Tuesday or Wednesday.     • Adbert Alzolay gives up three runs to take loss
      After coming in with a 1-0 lead in the eighth, Adbert Alzolay gave up three runs on four hits to take a loss to the Brewers on Friday.

      Advice: All four hits were singles, and three of them were soft, coming in at 80 mph or less. Two were grounders perfectly placed in between Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner up the middle. To be fair, Alzolay was missing his spots, and he hurt his cause by paying no attention to the baserunners and giving up three steals. Obviously, this won’t help his chances of seeing saves again anytime soon.       Pivetta (elbow) allowed four runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five over three-plus innings for Triple-A Worcester on Thursday.

      Advice: Pivetta threw 62 pitches in the first and possibly only start while on a rehab assignment. He ran into immediate trouble, walking the first two batters of the game then giving up three straight singles. He settled in after that, retiring the next nine batters, before he was pulled following another two walks to lead off the fourth inning. "Repertoire felt good, just wasn't throwing a ton of strikes," Pivetta told Tommy Cassell of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette. "I have some mechanical adjustments to work on but we'll be fine." Red Sox manager Alex Cora previously indicated Pivetta would need just one rehab start, and if that's the case, the right-hander is on schedule for next week's two-game set against Atlanta on Tuesday or Wednesday.       Advice: Doval entered in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run lead and retired the side in order on 14 pitches. He's given up just two runs over 11 innings since a rough season debut against San Diego on March 30.
