The four walks were a season high for the southpaw, but it was still a decent performance for him despite the end result. He's maintained a 3.13 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 109:30 K:BB through 92 innings over 16 starts this season. Ragans is projected to make his next start at home versus the Marlins in a favorable matchup.       Cole Ragans allowed two runs with seven strikeouts over six innings in a loss to the Athletics on Wednesday.

      Advice: Ragans worked around three hits through two scoreless innings before the A’s brought a pair of runs in to score on two walks and two singles in the third. Ragans settled in to toss three more scoreless innings, striking out seven before his day was done. He took the loss as the Royals scored just one run in the contest.       Bello (7-4) earned the win against the Blue Jays on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts over six innings.

      Advice: Bello threw three scoreless innings before loading the bases in the fourth, but he managed to limit the damage to two runs and responded with two more scoreless frames before leaving the game with a 5-2 lead. This was Bello's first quality start since May 22 and his best performance in June, as he surrendered 14 total runs over his first three June outings.       Brayan Bello punched out six Red Sox across six innings on Wednesday in a 7-3 win over the Blue Jays. He walked two and allowed two earned runs on his way to securing the victory.

      Advice: Bello showed a great approach in this one: leaning on his sinker and slider against right-handed batters while mixing those two with a heavy dose of changeups against lefties. He kept the ball on the edges and his velocity was up a tick across the board.     • Brandon Pfaadt logs quality start in loss to Nats
      Brandon Pfaadt logged a quality start in Wednesday afternoon’s loss to the Nationals, giving up three runs on five hits across his 6 1/3 innings of work.

      Advice: The 25-year-old right-hander astonishingly did not record a strikeout in the contest while issuing four free passes. Still, he managed to keep the Nats off the board completely until Jesse Winker’s go-ahead two-run shot in the sixth inning. He then exited with two men on and one out in the seventh inning, and one of those runners ultimately came around to score as well. Pfaadt didn’t get a single swing and miss on any of his 77 pitches in the contest, registering an underwhelming CSW of only 23 percent.     • Justin Verlander heads to IL with neck discomfort
      Astros placed RHP Justin Verlander on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 16, with neck discomfort.

      Advice: Houston’s decision to put Verlander on the shelf doesn’t come as much of a surprise after skipper Joe Espada told reporters earlier on Tuesday that the 41-year-old veteran was progressing “slower than expected” in his recovery from a lingering neck issue, which has been bothering him for a couple weeks now. He’ll get an extended break in an effort to put the issue to bed. No word yet on how the Astros will fill his spot in their injury-depleted starting rotation moving forward.       The Astros placed Verlander on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to Sunday, due to neck discomfort.

      Advice: Manager Joe Espada said earlier Tuesday that the veteran right-hander was progressing slower than expected from the neck discomfort that scratched him from Saturday's scheduled start, and he'll be sidelined for at least a couple turns through the rotation.     • Progressing slowly
      Astros manager Joe Espada said Tuesday that Verlander's (neck) progress has been "slower than we expected," Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Verlander was scratched of his most recently scheduled start this past weekend against the Tigers because of neck discomfort. The club had been hoping he would be ready to start Thursday versus the White Sox, and while Espada didn't seem to officially rule Verlander out for the series finale in Chicago, he now appears likely to be pushed back again. Houston could have Spencer Arrighetti and Ronel Blanco both move up a day to start on Thursday and Friday, respectively, which would keep both pitchers on their typical four days' rest. The arrangement would also give Verlander a couple extra days to heal up if the team thinks he could take the ball Saturday versus the Orioles.       Advice: Espada said that Verlander’s progress from his neck injury is going “slower than expected.” The right-hander was scratched from his start against the Tigers on Saturday because of that discomfort, and while there was hope he could make his next scheduled trip to the mound, that’s very much in doubt.
