      Astros’ manager Joe Espada told reporters on Wednesday that Justin Verlander (neck) is now playing catch every other day.

      Advice: There’s still no timeline on a potential return to the Astros’ rotation, but it’s encouraging to hear that the 41-year-old hurler is ramping back up.       Advice: Singer was able to keep the Rays' bats relatively quiet Tuesday, as the only run scored against him came as a result of a wild pitch in the second inning. However, a lack of run support from his offense combined with a collapse of Kansas City's bullpen following a lengthy rain delay will cause the 27-year-old righty to take his third loss in five starts.       Advice: Donovan had just six hitless games in June -- two of which were at the start of the month and two more at the end. He got off to a positive start in July with Tuesday's effort, his third three-hit game over his last 11 contests. He's up to a .270/.340/.414 slash line with eight home runs, 42 RBI, 37 runs scored, two stolen bases, 18 doubles and one triple over 79 games.       Brady Singer pitched well in a losing effort against the Rays on Tuesday night, allowing one run on three hits over his five frames.

      Advice: Singer also issued three walks on a rainy evening in Kansas City while punching out four opposing hitters. The only run that scored against him came in the second inning as Richie Palacios scampered home on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning. The 27-year-old right-hander got 15 swings and misses on 88 pitches on the night — 10 of those on his slider — while posting a strong CSW of 32 percent.       Astros general manager Dana Brown said Justin Verlander (neck) has resumed playing catch.

      Advice: The 41-year-old has been on the injured list since the middle of June with a neck issue, and the Astros have been tight-lipped about his recovery. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, “Verlander has deferred all questions to the team, which remains insistent this injury is just a neck issue,” but the team has said that he’ll need a prolonged buildup and then at least one rehab start, which means a return before the All-Star break feels unlikely. Overall, it's been a disappointing season for the second-year player, but his bat woke up a bit over the latter part of the month.
