    • Nolan Jones likely headed to IL with back injury
Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports that Nolan Jones (back) is likely headed to the injured list.

Advice: Jones was removed from Sunday’s game with stiffness in his back. The 25-year-old will be replaced on the roster by prospect Jordan Beck, with the transaction likely announced Tuesday. Jones has been a disappointment this year, and now he’ll miss at least a week while recovering from the back ailment. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:39 pm

    • Tosses bullpen Monday
Gallen (hamstring) threw a bullpen session at Chase Field on Monday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Advice: Gallen indicated Sunday that believes he'll be ready for his next scheduled start, which would tentatively line up for Wednesday, and Monday's bullpen backs up this optimism. Assuming he still feels strong Tuesday morning, there appears to be a good chance he'll toe the rubber later this week. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:00 pm

    • Zac Gallen (hamstring) throwing bullpen Monday
Zac Gallen (hamstring) is throwing a bullpen before Monday’s game against the Dodgers.

Advice: Gallen left Friday’s start against the Mariners with a hamstring issue, but the exit was deemed precautionary, and manager Torey Lovullo expressed that he was optimistic that Gallen would make his next start. Assuming all goes well with the bullpen session, that seems to check out for Wednesday’s start against the Dodgers. Rotoworld Yesterday, 4:09 pm

    • Continues throwing on flat ground
Cole (elbow) threw on flat ground again Saturday, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the session went "really well," Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Advice: Cole has been playing catch on flat ground for about three weeks, extending his throwing distance up to 120 feet. Boone indicated early last week that the ace hurler is getting close to throwing off a mound, and that could happen as soon as this week. If Cole continues to progress without setbacks, he could feasibly be ready to join the Yankees' rotation when he's eligible to come off the 60-day IL in late May. • Bo Bichette gets a day off on Monday
Bo Bichette is not in the lineup on Monday against the Royals

Advice: It’s been a tough start to the year for Bichette, who is slashing just .210/.263/.305 with one home run and three steals. Bichette continues to make a solid amount of contact, but he also continues to chase pitches outside of the zone at a high rate. Even though he makes contact on those pitches, and has a lower swinging strike rate than last year, he’s now hitting the ball on the ground over 52 percent of the time and has just a 2.3 percent barrel rate. His approach may need to change in order for him to get back to his high batting average. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is starting at shortstop and betting eighth in his place. • Steps out of starting nine
Bichette is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals.

Advice: The Blue Jays haven't indicated that Bichette is nursing an injury or dealing with an illness, so his absence from the lineup for Monday's series opener likely amounts to a maintenance day. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will slide over from third base to man shortstop in place of Bichette, who had started in every game dating back to April 2. Bichette's day off comes while he's managed just one hit in 18 at-bats over his last five games, dropping his batting average to .210 for the season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:11 pm

    • Likely headed to IL
The Rockies are expected to place Jones (back) on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Luke Zahlmann of The Denver Gazette reports.

Advice: Zahlmann notes that outfield prospect Jordan Beck is on track to receive a call-up from Triple-A Albuquerque, and given that he suffered a setback with his lingering back injury in Sunday's 8-2 loss to the Astros, Jones is an obvious candidate to come off the 26-man active roster in a corresponding move. Jones has been removed from games twice within the past week due to back stiffness, so it makes sense for the Rockies to get out in front of the issue and put him on the shelf for at least the next week and a half so he can rest up and recover. After a breakout 20-20 campaign with the Rockies in 2023, Jones has struggled mightily over the first month of the 2024 season, slashing just .170/.243/.277 while contributing one home run and two stolen bases over 103 plate appearances. • Could be emerging from slump
Riley posted an exit velocity over 100 mph on three different balls Saturday but failed to get a hit on any of them, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The third baseman did collect two hits Sunday, including a walk-off single in the 10th inning, but for the most part Riley hasn't been getting results of late -- he hasn't homered in 18 straight games, slashing .222/.317/.319 over that stretch with five doubles, a triple and six RBI. Given the way he's swinging the bat, however, it seems only a matter of time before the 27-year-old heats up. Advanced metrics back up the idea that Riley's lack of production is mainly due to bad luck -- he sits in the 90th percentile in barrel rate on the season, right in line with his 2023 (89th percentile) and 2022 (96th percentile) campaigns. • Early exit Sunday
Jones was forced to exit Sunday's game against the Rockies in the seventh inning due to back stiffness, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Jones has battled back stiffness since Tuesday and was forced to miss two games with the issue. After managing to play the entirety of Saturday's contest, Jones was back in the starting lineup Sunday but was forced to exit early after going 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. The team has not yet decided whether Jones will require a stint on the injured list, but manager Bud Black did say that he is concerned that the issue is recurring. Rotowire.com Sunday, 10:50 pm
