    Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomcyzk said Friday that Hayes (back) will resume baseball activities Monday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

    Advice: The plan is for Hayes to play catch and field grounders Monday before progressing to swinging a bat Tuesday. Hayes landed on the injured list last weekend with a back injury which had been nagging at him for a while, but it sounds like he's feeling better after a little rest.   • DJ LeMahieu (foot) starts rehab Friday
    DJ LeMahieu (foot) will start his minor league rehab assignment Friday with Double-A Somerset.

  • Nearing throwing program
    Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Friday that Merryweather (ribs/back) could start a throwing program Monday, Mike McGraw of the Chicago Daily Herald reports.

    Advice: The right-hander has been shut down since he suffered a rib stress fracture in his back in early April but is now ready to start up a throwing program.     Noda is 5-for-13 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI, three walks and four runs over his last four games with Triple-A Las Vegas.

    Advice: The brief but impressive stretch is in stark contrast to the first eight games following Noda's demotion, when he posted an .083 average across 37 plate appearances. The 28-year-old, who limped to a .128 average and .440 OPS during his 30 games in the majors to open the season, could soon earn himself a call back to the big-league club if he can keep his hot bat going for an extended period.   • Brewer placed on injured list
    Cubs placed RHP Colten Brewer on the 15-day injured list with a lower back tightness.

    Advice: Brewer had a 3.09 ERA with 12 strikeouts and four walks in 11 2/3 innings pitching out of the bullpen for the Cubs. He spent time with the Yankees last year as he’s bounced around after being drafted by the Pirates in the fourth round in 2011. The Cubs recalled Porter Hodge to fill Brewer’s spot while he’s out.   • Makes splash in minors return
    Butler, optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday, made his minor-league debut in Thursday's win over El Paso and went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs.

    Advice: Butler drew the start in center field in his first minor-league game of 2024 and made an instant impact while working out of the No. 2 spot in the order. Butler had a much different experience against big-league arms (.170/.273/.264), so he'll presumably need to have an extended stretch of success at the Triple-A level to earn a promotion.     The Cubs recalled Hodge from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

    Advice: Hodge has posted a 4.80 ERA and walked 12 over 15 innings this season between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa, but he's also struck out 26.     Andujar (knee) opened Triple-A Las Vegas' win over El Paso on Thursday as the designated hitter, going 2-for-3 with a three-run double.

    Advice: Andujar was lifted for a pinch hitter late in the game, but his timing at the plate appeared to be in fine form despite his extended layoff. The multi-hit effort was reminiscent of the red-hot spring Andujar enjoyed before it was cut short by his knee injury, and the veteran may not need an inordinately long rehab assignment if he continues to wield a hot bat for the Aviators.     Astros recalled LHP Parker Mushinski from Triple-A Sugar Land.
