    • Nails down ninth save
Bednar picked up the save against the Cubs on Thursday, pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one.

Advice: Bednar entered the game to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and needed only eight pitches to retire the side and secure his ninth save of the season. The right-handed reliever has converted each of his last eight save attempts and carries a 2.57 ERA in May to go along with a 6:2 K:BB. Bednar has also recorded at least one strikeout in three straight appearances and in six of seven appearances overall this month. Rotowire.com Today, 3:48 am
    • Diaz blows back-to-back saves
Edwin Diaz blew another save against the Phillies on Thursday.

Advice: Three days after blowing his second save of the season, Diaz blew another save opportunity against the Phillies. Pitching with a one-run lead, Diaz walked Brandon Marsh to start the ninth inning. Marsh advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bryson Stott. All three of Diaz’ blown saves have come in the month of May. Once an elite closer, Diaz is showing the rust of someone who missed an entire season with a knee injury.

    • Another blown save
Diaz blew the save Thursday against Philadelphia, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over one inning.

Advice: Diaz inherited a one-run lead for the bottom of the ninth but was unable to convert his sixth save of 2024. Instead, Diaz walked Brandon Marsh and then allowed Marsh to reach second on a wild pitch before Bryson Stott hit an RBI single to send the game into extras. Diaz has blown three of his last four save chances and has allowed six runs over his last eight innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:28 pm
    • Quintana goes five innings in no-decision
Jose Quintana allowed four hits and two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings and picked up a no-decision in the Mets’ 6-5 victory over the Phillies on Thursday.

Advice: Quintana had only thrown 81 pitches when he was removed with runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the sixth. Those runs scored on Alec Bohm’s double and Nick Castellanos’ sacrifice fly. Quintana struck out four and lowered his ERA to 5.21 on the season. The 35-year-old left-hander is set to face the Guardians on the road in his next start.

    • Rebounds in no-decision
Quintana didn't factor into the decision in Thursday's extra-innings win over the Phillies, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.

Advice: After surrendering 12 earned runs across his previous two starts, Quintana delivered a solid outing against Philadelphia. He didn't allow an extra-base hit during the start, and both the runs against him came after Quintana was pulled. He allowed J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper to reach on consecutive singles before being replaced by Reed Garrett, who surrendered an RBI single and a sac fly immediately after. Through nine starts, Quintana owns a 5.21 ERA with a 32:18 K:BB across 46.2 innings. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:22 pm
    • Bednar with another clean inning for save
David Bednar picked up the save against the Cubs on Thursday.

Advice: The save was Bednar’s ninth of the season. He pitched a clean ninth inning and recorded a strikeout to preserve a one-run lead. After a shaky start to the season, Bednar now has back-to-back clean innings in save opportunities. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:20 pm
    • Done in by long ball
Perez (1-3) took the loss Wednesday against the Brewers, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out four.

Advice: All nine of Milwaukee's runs against Perez came via the home run -- the left-hander gave up a career-high five long balls after not allowing more than one in any of his first eight starts this year. It was a brutal day for the veteran left-hander, whose ERA is up to 4.86 with a 1.50 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB through 50 innings this season. Perez will look to get back on track in his next outing, currently slated for early next week at home versus San Francisco. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 3:20 pm

    • Martín Pérez allows five homers in loss to Brewers
Martín Pérez was torched for nine runs over five innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers.

Advice: Yikes. Pérez put together one of the worst outings of his extensive big-league career on Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee, matching a career-high in terms of runs allowed, while also setting a new career-high mark by allowing five home runs. The 33-year-old left-hander’s ERA skyrocketed from 3.60 entering this one to a bloated 4.86 mark in the process. He’ll attempt to rebound on Tuesday when he faces the injury-depleted Giants at home. • Beginning mound work Wednesday
Phillips (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Phillips has been on the injured list with a strained right hamstring since May 5, and he resumed playing catch Friday. He will presumably throw multiple bullpen sessions before progressing to facing live hitters, though he shouldn't take long to build back up as a reliever. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 5:23 pm
