      Bednar picked up the save against the Cubs on Thursday, pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one.

      Advice: Bednar entered the game to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and needed only eight pitches to retire the side and secure his ninth save of the season. The right-handed reliever has converted each of his last eight save attempts and carries a 2.57 ERA in May to go along with a 6:2 K:BB.     • Diaz blows back-to-back saves
      Edwin Diaz blew another save against the Phillies on Thursday.



      Advice: Three days after blowing his second save of the season, Diaz blew another save opportunity against the Phillies. Pitching with a one-run lead, Diaz walked Brandon Marsh to start the ninth inning. Marsh advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bryson Stott. All three of Diaz’ blown saves have come in the month of May. Once an elite closer, Diaz is showing the rust of someone who missed an entire season with a knee injury.

      Diaz blew the save Thursday against Philadelphia, allowing one run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts over one inning.

      Advice: Diaz inherited a one-run lead for the bottom of the ninth but was unable to convert his sixth save of 2024. Instead, Diaz walked Brandon Marsh and then allowed Marsh to reach second on a wild pitch before Bryson Stott hit an RBI single to send the game into extras.       Advice: All nine of Milwaukee's runs against Perez came via the home run -- the left-hander gave up a career-high five long balls after not allowing more than one in any of his first eight starts this year. It was a brutal day for the veteran left-hander, whose ERA is up to 4.86 with a 1.50 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB through 50 innings this season.       Martín Pérez was torched for nine runs over five innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Brewers.

      Advice: Yikes. Pérez put together one of the worst outings of his extensive big-league career on Wednesday afternoon in Milwaukee, matching a career-high in terms of runs allowed, while also setting a new career-high mark by allowing five home runs. The 33-year-old left-hander’s ERA skyrocketed from 3.60 entering this one to a bloated 4.86 mark in the process. He’ll attempt to rebound on Tuesday when he faces the injury-depleted Giants at home.       Phillips (hamstring) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

      Advice: Phillips has been on the injured list with a strained right hamstring since May 5, and he resumed playing catch Friday.       Evan Phillips (hamstring) is slated to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday.

      Advice: It’s the first time throwing off a mound for Phillips since hitting the injured list back in early May with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain.       Diaz (1-2) allowed two runs on a hit, a hit batsman and two walks without striking out a batter in one-third of an inning to take the loss and a blown save Monday versus the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Diaz loaded the bases with back-to-back one-out walks, and Kevin Newman delivered the walk-off two-run single. This was Diaz's first blown save since his season debut, but he's hardly been dominant lately, allowing seven runs with a 5:6 K:BB over his last 3.2 innings.
