    • Maikel Garcia goes 0-for-4 out of leadoff spot
Maikel Garcia went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts on Wednesday in the Royals’ win over the Marlins.

Advice: Yikes. Garcia’s latest hitless effort leaves him with a .174 (21-for-121) batting average with zero homers and six steals over his last 30 games. It’s fair to wonder how much longer Kansas City can afford to stick with him anywhere near the top of their lineup moving forward. Rotoworld 50 minutes ago

    • Looks set to join big club Thursday
The Reds announced Wednesday that Marte (suspension) has rejoined the team after completing his rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: Marte won't be eligible to return from his 80-game suspension until Thursday's series opener in St. Louis, but since he's back in Cincinnati rather than sticking around in Louisville, the Reds are presumably preparing to add him back to the 26-man active roster ahead of their four-game series this weekend. The 22-year-old struggled to regain his timing at the plate during the rehab assignment, slashing .151/.151/.170 with no walks and a 28.3 percent strikeout rate over 12 games. However, after Marte posted an .822 OPS in 123 plate appearances in his first taste of the big leagues in 2023, the Reds look as though they'll allow him to iron out the kinks in the majors. He's seen action at third base, second base and shortstop during his rehab assignment and may have to settle for more of a utility role with the Reds initially until he performs well enough to warrant everyday playing time. • Nabs two bags in loss
Garcia went 0-for-2 with two steals, two walks and one run scored in Tuesday's loss to the Marlins.

Advice: Garcia drew a second consecutive start at the keystone and stole two bases in the first inning after leading off with a walk. The 24-year-old has struggled mightily in June, as he entered the contest slashing .145/.211/.169 with no homers and four steals across 90 plate appearances. The Kansas City infield became more crowded with CJ Alexander debuting and Michael Massey (back) returning from the injured list Monday (though Massey will serve as DH for now), so Garcia will have to start producing at the plate and on the basepaths to maintain a starting role. • Maikel Garcia leads off, shifts to second base
Maikel Garcia is back in the leadoff spot and playing second base for the Royals on Monday.

Advice: It’s the first time Garcia has played anywhere other third this year, but the Royals just called up a third baseman in CJ Alexander and have Michael Massey apparently limited to DH at the moment. As a result, Garcia will get to show his versatility. The return to the leadoff spot is also good news; he had led off throughout the season before being dropped to seventh on Saturday and eighth on Sunday. Considering that he has a .291 OBP, there’s no blaming the Royals for making the switch. Still, he remains a better bet than the alternative options to bat ahead of Bobby Witt Jr. Rotoworld Monday, 2:07 pm

    • Loses hold of leadoff gig
Garcia went 1-for-3 with a base hit in Sunday's 4-0 loss to the Rangers.

Advice: Garcia had made each of his first 74 starts of the season as the Royals' leadoff hitter, but he was dropped down to seventh and eighth in the batting order over the final two games of the weekend in Texas. His slide down the lineup comes while he's mustered a .152/.221/.177 slash line over 20 games thus far in June. The Royals haven't yet settled on a replacement for Garcia atop the lineup, as both Adam Frazier (thumb) and Nick Loftin received turns in the leadoff spot to close out the weekend. • Struggling on rehab assignment
The Reds haven't yet committed to activating Marte (suspension) when he's first eligible to return to the big club June 27, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: Reds manager David Bell professes not to be paying attention to Marte's numbers during his rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville as he continues the ramp-up process. Through the first 10 games of his assignment, Marte is hitting .156/.156/.178 with no walks and 13 strikeouts. If Marte can get back up to speed, the Reds could really use him both offensively and defensively at third base. Rotowire.com Sunday, 9:52 am

    • Noelvi Marte batting .194 at Triple-A Louisville
Reds 3B prospect Noelvi Marte went 0-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts on Thursday for Triple-A Louisville.

Advice: Marte is batting .194 through eight games at Triple-A Louisville as he continues to knock off some of the rust following a lengthy layoff due to a league-issued 80-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Rotoworld Thursday, 7:40 pm

    • Maikel Garcia gets a day off on Thursday
Maikel Garcia is not in the Royals’ lineup for Thursday’s game against the Athletics.

Advice: The 24-year-old is hitting just .145 in 16 games in June with 12 strikeouts. He does have four steals and 10 runs scored and is coming off a month of May where he hit .305, so this might be nothing but a brief cold stretch. The Royals will hope a day off helps him get back on track. In the meantime, Garrett Hampson will start at second base and hit eighth with Nick Loftin moving over to third base.
