      Kerry Carpenter (back) told reporters on Friday that he has been cleared to start baseball activities on Monday.

      Advice: The 26-year-old slugger will need at least a couple of weeks to ramp back up and will require a minor league rehab assignment before he’s ready to return to the Tigers’ lineup. If all goes well and he’s able to avoid any setbacks, we could see him back in the Olde English D right after the All-Star break.       Advice: Carpenter had been shut down since late May due to a lumbar spine stress fracture but is ready to begin baseball activities in the coming days. While he's still a ways out from returning, it's the first advancement he's made since being placed on the IL. Expect Carpenter to require a multi-game minor-league rehab stint before being cleared.       Advice: Castellanos came to the plate in a tie game in the ninth inning and blooped in a 78 mph double just beyond a sliding Fernando Tatis Jr. in right field. It was a much-needed big game for the veteran, who was hitting .203 in 14 games in June and is now hitting just .219 overall on the season. Castellanos is making more contact and striking out less this season, but he’s making less authoritative contact and really struggling to hit anything other than fastballs with a .134 AVG and .208 wOBA against off-speed pitches. Hinch described as therapy work, so the 26-year-old still looks to be at least a couple weeks away from being ready for game action. During Carpenter's ongoing absence, Matt Vierling has taken hold of a full-time role in the outfield, and Justyn-Henry Malloy has settled in as the Tigers' primary designated hitter.
