    • Taking seat against southpaw
Gorman is not in the lineup for Thursday's contest in Pittsburgh.

Advice: Left-hander Martin Perez is drawing the start on the mound for the Pirates, so the lefty-hitting Gorman will begin this one on the bench. Jose Fermin will occupy second base for the Cardinals. Rotowire.com 13 minutes ago

    • Begins swinging bat
Carter (back) flew to Arizona last week and has begun swinging a bat, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: This marks the first time Carter has swung a bat since landing on the injured list in early June. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said the plan calls for Carter to face live pitching in the next few days. The injury was first described as lower-back tightness but was then reclassified as a stress reaction, which prompted the lengthy rehab. Rotowire.com Today, 5:17 am

    • Cal Raleigh blasts solo homer in loss to O’s
Cal Raleigh went 1-for-4 with a solo homer against the Orioles on Wednesday.

Advice: Raleigh’s solo homer in the sixth inning off Keegan Akin provided the only offense the Mariners could muster on Wednesday against Baltimore. The 27-year-old backstop is hitting .201/.288/.394 with 15 homers, 51 RBI, and four steals across 313 plate appearances. Rotoworld Yesterday, 9:42 pm

    • James McArthur records five-out save against Rays
James McArthur went 1 2/3 innings on Wednesday against the Rays to earn the save. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter.

Advice: It wasn’t easy for McArthur who had to navigate an eighth inning in which he inherited two base runners and then saw Kyle Isbel make a phenomenal catch off a Taylor Walls line drive with Ben Rortvedt on second base in the ninth. Still, he closed this one out to earn his 15th save of the season. Rotoworld Yesterday, 8:15 pm
    • Daulton Varsho with two hits, RBI for Blue Jays
Daulton Varsho went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Wednesday against the Astros.

Advice: The Blue Jays once again shook up their lineup and Varsho landed in the fifth spot with George Springer back to lead-off and Bo Bichette fourth. Regardless, it still could not spark their struggling offense. Varsho briefly got his average back above the Mendoza-line before it sunk back to .199. He and nearly every Blue Jays’ hitter has been a disappointment this season. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:13 pm

    • Could return as second baseman
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated over the weekend that he may consider having Betts (wrist) play primarily at second base upon his return, Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Advice: The consideration to shift Betts back to second base from shortstop is primarily due to the impressive performance of Miguel Rojas, who has played excellent defense, as usual, while adding a surprisingly potent bat (he's slashing .291/.337/.437 over 164 plate appearances). The versatile Betts is no stranger to second base; he played a career-high 70 games at the position last year after beginning the campaign in the outfield. Betts was then asked to move to shortstop ahead of 2024 despite never having logged time there in the majors prior to 2023, and he's performed adequately defensively despite a few hiccups. It remains to be seen if the Dodgers will ultimately pursue having Betts and Rojas form their middle infield for most games, and Roberts has time to think through that scenario since Betts remains several weeks away from returning. He threw and ran Tuesday, per the Associated Press, but hasn't yet swung a bat. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:18 pm

    • Three hits in loss
Melendez went 3-for-3 with a double in Tuesday's 5-1 loss to the Rays.

Advice: Melendez accounted for half of the Royals' hits in the loss. This was his second multi-hit effort in the last three games, but he went just 3-for-19 over a seven-game stretch prior to his recent rebound. The outfielder continues to struggle overall with a .191/.258/.366 slash line, eight home runs, 24 RBI, 21 runs scored and two stolen bases through 256 plate appearances in a strong-side platoon role. • Rare regular-rest start Sunday
Lopez will start on regular rest Sunday versus the Phillies for just the second time this season, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Lopez struggled in his last start Tuesday versus the Giants, allowing just two runs but walking four over five inefficient innings. Atlanta has baked in extra rest for Lopez whenever it can during the first half as the right-hander shifts from reliever to starter, but he'll take the ball on normal rest against the division-rival Phillies this weekend. With 79.1 innings in 2024, Lopez has already exceeded his workload from each of the previous two seasons. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:18 am

    • Hit hard in Tuesday's loss
Cease (7-7) took the loss Tuesday, coughing up six runs on eight hits and two walks over 3.2 innings as the Padres fell 7-0 to the Rangers. He struck out five.

Advice: The right-hander got no help from his offense, but Cease created his own problems by serving up six extra-base hits, including a pair of homers by Nathaniel Lowe. Cease has been tagged for four runs or more in three of his last four starts, walking multiple batters each time. He'll take a 4.24 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 130:32 K:BB through 102 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home this weekend against the Diamondbacks. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 5:58 am
